Mueller State Park CO

I've tried some searching, but even google gives me 100+ pages of results with 100 pages per thread. Like finding a needle in a haystack (for me.)
I'm looking for some insight into camping at Mueller State Park near Divide CO. We are looking to spend a week out in CO in late august. The reviews on compendium look very good. We like peace and quiet, shade, great hiking (I realize this CG is at 9,500' so altitude will be a huge adjustment.)
We also like to kayak (will have it with us) and flyfish.
If you wouldn't mind sharing some firsthand info, I would appreciate it.
Thx
Jeff

Mueller SP covers a large area with campsites located on spurs off the main road which climbs up the mountain side. It's a great location for a visit to Cripple Creek and Victor. But no lake access nearby that I am aware of.

Eleven Mile Reservoir is just west of Mueller with campsites. You might want to check out Turquoise Lake near Leadville as there are campsites near the lakeshore if you can reserve them.

LOVE Mueller! We were there in early July and the elevation gave us a needed break from the summer heat. The BEST fly fishing on the planet is probably in the South Platte River, about 22 miles north of Woodland Park off hwy 67. Go to Deckers Country Store and they'll point you in the right direction.

Great place! Can't wait to come back. Stunning views everywhere. Clean well kept facilities. Helpful staff. Only negative was dogs not allowed on trails. Still plenty of forest service trails around that allow dogs.

It’s a great park, not my choice for fly fishing, but great hikes and you can drive to decent fly fishing spots if you want. Just note that if you have dogs, they are not allowed on the trails....

Camped at Turquoise Lake a few years ago, and enjoyed it. Found Leadville to be a little on the "weird" side. Too much dope.. Have you camped in Mueller? Any site or loop recommendations? We are only out a 10 days, so we may just spend three nights there.
Thanks

Thank you! Good news about the fishing.

Julie-Bob, thanks for the info from AllStays. I had read that also. Just looking for some additional info.

Thanks TB, my lovely wife will fish with me on very small creeks, and usually for a few hours. She also likes to sit in the kayak as I take her across small lakes to troll for a fish or two. She enjoys the scenery more than the fishing. Trout usually like to hang out in nice places. So, the fishing part is not as important to a happy campsite as the peace and quiet. We will bring bikes along with the kayak..

Look for a PM from me. Hope you don't mind sharing a little info..

We LOVE Mueller! Beautiful park, nice hiking, but we never saw lakes or rivers (just a couple of ponds...if you can call them that). It is a very quiet park, which is nice. We definitely wish we had stayed longer & it’s on our list of “let’s visit again,” should we go back through the area.

Mueller St Park

GREAT PLACE! Have stayed there a few times. There’s some family sorta stuff to do there that I didn’t look into much. It served my purposes for a staging area for the regional things to do; including very short drive to trail head to hike up back side of Pikes Peak. Easy to find heading out of CO Springs (West more or less). It fills up so reservations a must; extended stay once by a night and there was a long line for same day reservations early as soon as the office opened...camper beware. Some spots offer great views but can’t remember which. Showers and facilities were best of the best as of last July. Go and have a great time!

Great fishing near Mueller SP

We camp at Mueller every summer. Eleven Mile Reservoir for lake fishing, Eleven Mile Canyon and South Platte river for river fishing. The Dream Stream is a blue ribbon stretch of river in the same area. All are accessed from Hwy 24 west of Florissant,CO. You can also go to the reservoir in Victor which is on way to Cripple Creek (gambling).

Mueller is on my list of spots to hit early this year just to get out. Close by for me, just on the other side of Pikes Peak. Below are some links for you.

http://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/pa...s/default.aspx
http://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/pa...NTORY-2017.pdf

Fly fishing is wonderful all around there, so pick up a state fishing reg brochure and it will give you all the details you need.
Here is the link to the CPW app for fishing:

The previously mentioned fishing spots are great and the Arkansas River is just west, go to Buena Vista and then north or south for fishing access.

Have fun!

Beware of horrendous roads, paved and gravel around 11 Mile and the Dream Stream!!!! There is a gravel road that will wreck your AS if you follow an outdated GPS to the Campground as I did last fall. Even the paved roads are a disgrace and the potholes will trash your trailer’s axle alignment. Beautiful place and fishing can be outstanding but would never return with my trailer unless they fix the roads and put up better signage.

Thanks all for the additional insight. We don't mind a little drive to find a good place to kayak. I'll definitely watch the roads going in and out.
Sure looks like it's worth a three or four night stay. I've been to the park website also. We almost always go for a spot outside the loop, towards the end. There's usually a little more room between the campsites. Most list partial shade, we prefer full shade, but at 9,000'+ a little sunshine will be ok to warm things up.
Thanks again.
