Minnesota

We plan to spend two weeks in September exploring Minnesota. We've been to Mall of America so no need to repeat that. Would love to hear any suggestions for sights, campgrounds, factory tours - whatever you found to be interesting.

We're taking our Interstate rather than our trailer so that we can move fast and often to try to fit in as much as possible.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Minnesota has an abundance of State Parks that are incredible. They are always crowed, but this year there are no "walk-in" sites held open. I don't know what that will do for reservations - more sites available, less chance of finding one as a last minute walk-in.

Be sure to visit the North Shore. The Tall Ships will be in Duluth this summer (Aug 18-21), and the whole drive up the North Shore of Lake Superior is spectacular.

What markdoane said.

Also, drive just past Grand Marais on the North Shore, take a left, and drive up the Gunflint Trail.

This ends at the Boundary Waters, and it is a beautiful, historical area.

There are some lovely Superior National Forest sites up there, too, as well as a number of full service campgrounds on the many lakes.

A beautiful state, headed there myself to visit friends in a few weeks.

Have a great time.

North Shore

I agree with Maggie - the North Shore from Duluth to the Canadian Border is spectacular. There is a dinner train that goes along Lake Superior out of Duluth that is fun. The little town of Grand Marais is so quaint and the Folk School is really something to search out. Of course you can also spend some time at the Airstream Park in central Minnesota - very lovely and nice folks too.

The driftless area in SE MN, NE Iowa, and SW WI. is a unique geological area. Driving up Hwy. 61 is beautiful.

Take the ore boat tour in Duluth, also a good railroad museum. Lots to do all along the north shore. Lots of hiking trails in the state parks, Superior hiking trail if you are up for a challenge. Palisade Head is an overlook of lake superior up high on a bluff - There is a road all the way to the top but not sure I would try it with the interstate, very narrow/tree branches, parking available at the bottom. There is a municipal campground right in Grand Marais that you can walk into downtown from. Parks are much less crowded after labor day.

Since we're not going until September should I take advantage of the interval period and renew our passports? How easy is it to skip back and forth across the border? And, is that something I want to do?
