Perry - I look forward to hitting port st. Joe in coming years - it was my first ever time to see the ocean from that beach and campground at age 15 - beautiful spot in my memory !!

It is also a lot closer than going to St Pete from where we live. We were already in Mt Dora, FL so Ft Desoto was not that far away. It did make the trip out of there longer and our little monkey had a full blown temper tantrum when we got to Falling Waters which is our usual half way point when coming from central FL. We are home schooling this year so I expect we will go to St Joe on Jan-Fed time frame when it is cool and the bugs are not bad. We can travel when we want to instead of when the school wants us to.

On a recent trip we had a guy come over and discuss the relative merits of using a minivan to tow our Airstream, which ordinarily would have been fine except that I was mid-hitch up with the TV wedged across the loop road. I carried on working but he wouldn't let up, not getting the hint that I really needed to move the rig. *sigh*. It took me much longer to clear the road as he sucked his teeth and tutted.

I've yet to attract a proper audience yet, though, thank goodness.

I have run more than one person off when I was setting up or packing every thing up to leave. We can always talk later. Someone trying to help or just asking silly questions just confuses me. I need to concentrate these days and can forget steps (even using a check list) if too distracted. I quickly explain that I do not mean to be rude, but---.

After 5 years of using an HA hitch, I finally ran into a similar hitch alignment problem I couldn't deal with last month - but my problem was unhitching, not hitching - although had I been able to unhitch, I'm sure I would have had a real chore to hitch up again later.

The back-in site we were assigned was quite level where the trailer was parked, but when I got the trailer back into position, the lie of the land was such that our truck was on quite an upward slope up to the roadway - i.e. the site was quite a bit lower than the access road.

No matter what I did with the tongue jack, I could not get the stinger to come loose in the hitch. Without it coming loose, it was impossible to get it to pull the stinger out of the trailer hitch even though everything was undone and ready.

Trying to do so just dragged the trailer and popped the scissors chocks out of position between the trailer wheels!

At this point I realized that if I ever did get it unhitched I would probably have real fun and games trying to hitch up when we wanted to leave.

In the end, I just got them to switch sites for me - although no doubt the office people wondered what sort of a newbie RV'er I was that couldn't even unhitch his trailer!

I still think that a PP or HA is well worth this occasional inconvenience. As mentioned this is the first such problem I encountered in five years of use.

Just about anything you can buy has some sort of negative. If you can live with it, great. Nothing is perfect, except maybe my wife. Just discovered she reads the forums occasionally to check up on me, cya. Jim

I guess I was what you could call a spectator also.
We were in a very nice campground in Sioux Falls, SD. Nice and quite, large sites right by a lake and no bugs.
We were already setup when a unit, sob, pulled in beside us and the parents and three little girls piled out. We exchanged greetings and he said first things first we are all going swimming. I said sounds like you have your priorities straight.
I was in our trailer when he came back and finished his setup.
Next morning we are both preparing to leave and I hear the electric jack on his trailer really struggling. He was raising the front of the trailer probably eight inches trying to hookup. The problem was he still had all of his stabilizers down. I could see daylight under the front stabilizers and could see the axles slowly dropping a little.
I thought about saying something but decided to keep my comments to myself.
He didn't act like a newbie doing other things around the trailer.
Had a great trip out West. Craters of the Moon National Park in Idaho is quite unusual. Recommend stopping by if you are any where close. We really love the western states.

jacking up with the stabilizers down...I have avoided that folley so far with my checklist (which I used "most" of the time, but need to use EVERY time)...my repeated screw up (well twice now anyway) is pulling my airstream out of my yard, then when in road, use the jack to lift the trailer to tighten up the WD jacks...then pull off...wait...oh crap...let the jack back down...get about 6 inches upon releasing my brake and hear the grinding noise on the concrete....luckily no damage...STOOOOOPID.

But if someone saw me going to jack up the trailer and I had stabilizers down...feel free to HOLLAR AT ME PLEASE!!!

I am nearly 1 year in on being an airstreamer and have taken several trips now and without any major incidents...a few notable near misses....gotta stay vigilant....

On my Bambi II if I moved with the stabilizers in place I would of simply rolled off them. I did do that once, no harm done. With my new trailer major damage could result from making the same stupid mistake. The 2006 Safari is much more complex in almost every system and way than the old Bambi. I really have to be on my toes or I can easily screw something up if I do not pay attention.

I guess that's when an audience is MOST welcome

"Mennonites may prove too squishy. "

This Mennonite is not at all squishy...
I know what it's like to have a audience, the more people watching, the more you tend to screw things up. As a semi driver for the last 10 years, I've had plenty of times to prove that.
