I'm kicking around going to Memphis Tn. for a few days. Any campground recommendations?

T.O.Fuller State Park

Jack,
Without a doubt, T.O.Fuller State Park is tops! It's a beautiful park located within the city limits of Memphis, near the river and Graceland. Fuller is spacious, wooded and has a nice municipal golf course.
HAPPY TRAILS

Crowded and patience needed for parking but worth seeing.

We were looking at the Memorial Day weekend so unfortunately my gut tells me that a state park (if they allow reservations) is already booked up, and if not, it's a long way to drive and find out everybody got there before you. Maybe someone has a private campground idea?

Jack,

If memory serves me correctly, we reserved at the Tennessee State Park website. This park is worth the try.

There are other options near Memphis that we've utilized and one is Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River RV Park on the Mississippi River just west of Memphis a short distance (West Memphis, Ark.). The Memphis skyline is visible from the park and you're camped right on the river with the sounds of the barges pushing their loads. Few trees at this one.

Another we've used is Ameica's Best Campground in Marion, Arkansas, also just across the river. Woodalls rates it and Tom Sawyer with four W's if that means anything to you. Good luck and I hope this helps you in your search.

Another would be

We stayed in Tom Sawyer RV Park in West Memphis in January. The park is not high on amenities, but is on the Mississippi River and the Memphis skyline can be seen from the park. We enjoyed watching the traffic on the river. West Memphis is accross the river from Memphis in Arkansas. The only issue was road construction on the levee side that was rough. The campground was not long on extras, but we would stay there again.

Pepper, Your review hits the nail on the head. T.O. Fuller is definitely an oasis in an otherwise difficult city to find a good spot in. Give it a try next time you're in the area. Watch dumping wash water on the ground as the host has an evil eye for that stuff. ;-)

Thanks. I checked and this particular state park is first come first served. So it's out for this trip. From what I can see, there is the Good Sam across from Graceland, the America's Best in Marion, and another called East Memphis campground. I know the America's Best in Branson is well liked, so maybe this might be a good option....but again I need to make the phone call. It's late in the game to be looking for a site on a holiday weekend.

Other places in Memphis are Meeman-Shelby State Park near Millington and there are a large number of spaces at Agricenter in Shelby Farms Park. The Casinos in Tunica have space, and there is also Waldoxey State Park in Mississippi.

We stayed at the Rv park across the street from graceland last May and thought is was just fine. It is tucked in behind the "Heartbreak Hotel" which is across from the mansion but next to the museum. We were just overnighters and thus used a 60ft pull thru. We were booked at another park that was recommended by the local tourist center but decided the area was to scary to evn stop let alone park, I can't remember the name.

Well it looks like we are going to stay in the America's Best Campground at this point. They have room for the holiday weekend. Note however that it changes to a KOA on the 16th of May. That opens another cup of worms since we have no guarantee on pricing nor whether they will accept my Good Sam card. Apparently the new owners have not clairified these issues with the old owners. I'll know more next week I guess.

Glad you could find a spot Jack. KOA change noted. At least you'll be on the west side of the rough and narrow part of the I-40 mess leading up to the bridge across the Big Muddy. Have a great trip.

If you are interested in state parks, I suggest you try reserveamerica.com. Tennessee is one of their states. I use reserveamerica exclusively to book state parks in Texas. In fact it is the only way to book Texas state parks on line. It will show availablity, amenities and usually a map.

I've used them before on some of the Corp of Engineer parks. They recently revised their site and if you have had an account with them, you need to re-enroll.

Go Heartbreak!
Stay at the campground and walk over to the pool!
It is at the back of motel, and front of camp.

Jack,
Wal Doxey State Park is great but it's out from Holly Springs Ms. about 40 to 50 miles North West to Memphis. It's a great park we stay there a lot. You do have to have a reservation. The crime rate is really bad in Memphis so be very careful.

Thanks. We will be 14 miles northwest of Memphis in Arkansas, so from what I see, it's fairly rural. The crime thing is always questionable. Yeah, every town has its bad sides so we are pretty observant of that. But crime statistics sometimes are really misused and don't take into account the metropolitan area as a whole. I hate to label any city in general as being dangerous or bad based on statistics alone which tend to tie to boundaries.

If you were in St. Louis you might think that it's one big city, but instead you will find 103 municipalities (cities), that surround the STL city boundaries. So crime stats really don't tell the whole story.

So we will be observant while visiting. Thanks for your concern.

Regards,

Jack
