Memphis Civil rights museum

Dear friends--

We will be coming through Memphis from HWY 40 west on our way to Nashville. I would like to stop in memphis for a few hours and visit the Civil rights Museum, then on to Nashville. Does anyone have knowledge of where I could park my 30 foot classic and truck ? I plan to take an Uber to the museum.

thanks

marc

On a good day, you can probably just park at the Museum. Otherwise, I'd make a pitch for parking at the Bass Pro Shop at the pyramid, checking that out, and taking Uber from there. I'm sure the store manager would approve if you asked.

You might be able to park at the south end of the parking lot (see below) or pull through two spaces, depending on how many cars are in the lot. There were no parking spaces on the street when we were there. (Do NOT park in spaces reserved for tour buses.)

See parking lot GPS location on Google Earth: 35° 7.991'N 90° 3.468'W

==========

Restaurant tip: Central BBQ is located across the street to the east of the walkway that separates the parking lot and the museum. This restaurant has been featured on the Food Channel and has excellent reviews:

there is a train station and pavilion where they hold the farmers market a few blocks south of the museum. there used to be on street parking by thst pavilion as well as a small parking lot you might try if not on a Saturday morning. a lot of the streets between main and the river have on street parking some metered some not... but I wouldn't want to try to maneuver my rig round small city blocks unless it was Saturday afternoon or Sunday. don't know about the safety of leaving your rig in some of those areas or the regulations. It's probably possible to just drive right there, but if Bass Pro allows parking that would be super easy cause it's right off I -40 and you could just take the trolley down to Beale street and the museum.

I was at the Pyramid a couple of weeks ago. There was plenty of parking back towards Mudd Island. I 'd park there. Bass Pro Shop is a must see and take the ride to the top. Beautiful observation platform and good bar and restaurant. Of course you need to go down Beal Street for BBQ.

If you make it to Beale Street, we ate at the Pig on Beale BBQ Restaurant. Tour bus driver said food was better than BB King's; and to eat at Pig first, and then go to BB King's for live music. Not fancy, but BBQ was on par with Central BBQ.

BBQ restaurant recommended by Rock-N-Soul tour bus driver as "where the locals eat". Mixed reviews, and a little pricey because it was on Beale Street; but BBQ pulled pork and ribs were very good.

don't want to hijack this thread, but the mention of barbecue can stir up debate rivaling those about tow vehicles....even among Memphians!😄
that being said, if you end up at the Pyramid/Bass Pro, Cozy Corner Barbecue is a few blocks east (an easy drive, don't walk), and it's the real deal! Google the reviews. one of memphis's best that is easily doable with trailer in tow. 😋

The Pyramid/Bass Pro Shop is your best bet. The Agricenter has RV camping with hook-ups, but it's on the east side of Memphis. I wouldn't try parking around the Civil Rights Museum--too tight and too busy. Ditto for the train station plus it's still a little spooky down on that end of Main street at night.

The sporting thing to do would be to call Bass Pro and get prior approval. I doubt it'll be any problem. The Pyramid is spitting distance from I-40, but getting off I-40 is a little tricky. Look at maps, use GPS and you should be fine. Just remember you'll be right downtown and in the central business district.

Downtown Memphis is now its biggest entertainment area, with lots of good dining. Let us know if you need reccs.

(I lived in Memphis for 35 years before retiring to the country life.)

The museum is awesome!! Went there recently while attending an Airstream rally in Memphis. I'm headed to Nashville in a few weeks on my way to Crossville TN. Any recommendations about a place to stay in Nashville?
