Brian, I’m really enjoying your travel log here,
but I must say I’m very concerned about your tire pressure at 80Psi.
Your unit I think has a Gross of 7500, which is about 1900lbs per wheel.
A tire with load range B at 1900 is 45lbs add 10 Psi for speed of 75mph or 55Psi.
A tire with load range C at 2150 is 50lbs add 10 Psi for speed of 75mph or 60Psi.
They don’t show 1900lbs on the chart for C.
A tire with load range D at 2540 is 65lbs.
But you don’t have near that load
The chart I found doesn’t list the E range in an ST, but it must be higher than 2540, I would guess 2700lbs.
I think you need to consider lowering that tire pressure to about 60,
Please contact the dealer for a telephone # of the manufacturer to confirm this, JMHO
As far as your TV at 80 that sounds right for the rear tires, but on my 2500HD pickup it calls for 55 in the front tires and 85 in the rear at max.
PS: Doorgunner, sorry this horse isn’t dead.

The Maxxis Tires that I put on Lucy the other day actually have a maximum load rating of 2830 lbs. @ 80 psi. The tire dealer in Gillette, Wyoming, recommended running 80 psi, even with an 8000# load. The service manager at this tire dealership seemed extremely knowledgeable, and mounts many more trailer tires than most big city tire companies. This dealer had over sixty of these Maxxis ST's in stock. When I got the replacement Goodyear Marathon in Dallas, the dealer didn't even know that Goodyear made such a tire until he looked it up, and then had to get one shipped in from the warehouse in Fort Worth. I tend to go with the recommendation of the tire guy in Gillette.
My 2005 Suburban 2500 door post show a recommended tire pressure of 50# front and 89# rear wich is what I run when not towing Lucy. The reason that I run 70# front when towing is that when a weight distributing hitch is properly adjusted, it transfers half of the trailer weight to the front wheels of the TV, dictating a higher pressure for front tire load. When I recently stopped at Roger Williams Airstream in Weatherford, Texas, and had David Tidmore readjust my Hensley. He told me that I should be running 80# front with the Hensley properly adjusted.

Day 31 - June 13, 2007
We drove out east of Rapid City this morning and took a very scenic and casual drive to Badlands National Park. We drove the dirt roads of the Park for several hours. It's easy to image that you are driving on another planet. The prairie dogs are more that willing to pose for pictures. The goats are not quite as cooperative, but fun to watch anyway. The terrain is like nothing else and very interesting to see close up and personal.
After we left the Park, we drove up to Wall, South Dakota, and visited the world famous Wall Drug Store. That place has got to be the largest single retail store in the entire world. This is really significant when you consider that it is in a town of 800 people in the middle of nowhere. If you are ever travelling through South Dakota on I-90, be sure to stop at Wall Drugs, and allow several hours to see it. It's a really neat place. There are also a couple of cute little campgrounds right in Wall.
We headed back to Rapid City, and as usual, by the time we got back to Lucy, it was dark. We partook of a microwave hamburger supper from Lucy's kitchen.

Moosetags,
With the tire issues behind you (in more ways than one...and I'm sure by now we've debated the whole thing to death) you guys are really have a great trip. You are seeing a lot of country that most would like to but won't for what ever reason. Sharing your pictures is a great way to keep us all aware of the uniqueness that awaits us in every little town and down every little side road that's out there.

Enjoying your travelog!
Some good friends of our family own the campground in Interior, SD. This campground is on the very edge of the Badlands N.P. These folks are really nice and can tell you a lot about the local area. They also own a ranch that is adjacent to the Park.
When I get my trailer done - this will be one of the first trips to go see these folks.

Thanx for the tip, but we've already done the Badlands. Today, we are heading up to Deadwood and Lead, and tomorrow we're going south to Custer State Park.

Day 32 - June 14, 2007
We toured the area north of Rapid City. We hit Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, and Sturgis. All of these towns were pretty neat, although Deadwood has become super "touristy". It was still really interesting to see. I had worked in this area about 35 years ago. It has changed a bunch. The neat old buildings are still here, and the towns are still nice, especially Spearfish. Sturgis has become all about motorcycles, but really neat to see. We saw the cutest TT there in the middle of a big vacant lot. We also saw a really nice larger AS there all hooked up in a church parking lot.
We took the scenic drive through Spearfish Canyon (US 14A out of Spearfish). There was some really impressive scenery in the Canyon. As usual, we got back to Lucy for a microwave supper after dark.

In Deadwood, we saw several such people in period garb on the street. We don't know whether they are employees of the Tourist Development Commission or part of a time warp that we wandered into.

We wnt out this morning and toured Hill City, Custer, Hot Springs, Custer State Park, and Keystone. We even got a shot of Rushmore from way out. This is a really neat area. As usual, we got back to Lucy at dark.

Yes, we have on a former trip. Very impressive. We didn't even go to Rushmore on this trip. The photo in along US 16 about 10 miles out. It was a photo of opportunity near one of the rock tunnels.

Spearfish Canyon, one of our favorite 'mini' drives in the country. Whenever we head west through the area, we sidetrip to the Canyon, up and back, and then on our way. Anyone traveling this area, we recommend that you save time for this drive. ~G
