Lucy is on the road to Alaska

Well, we finally made it. We departed Santa Rosa Beach this morning and are on the road to Alaska. Once again we are trying to avoid using the Interstate Highways. We drove north through the Alabama countryside and we eventually turned west on US 84 and crossed into Mississippi. We made a fuel stop at Walmart Laurel. We continued west to Soso, Mississippi, where we got Lucy a campsite at the Big Creek Waterpark Campground. We have settled in for the night.

Tonight's pictures include:

- Lucy is all hooked up to Lillian and ready to pull out.
- The grandkids came by to see us off.
- Crossing into Alabama at Florala.
- Giant gas station fish in Florala, Alabama.
- Highway west of Opp, Alabama.
- Downtown Evergreen, Alabama.
- Lucy and Lillian taking a short break.
- Approaching the Alabama River Bridge on US 84.
- Entering Mississippi on US 84.
- Lucy's campground in Soso, Mississippi.

When I asked an Alaskan where are you from, they replied, I come from a small drinking town with a big fishing problem.

Bon Voyage Lucy and friends! We took a trip to Ak in 2014 in a MH and wanting to downsize to something like you. Curious about your fuel economy because up in the Yukon, the fuel stations are few and far between. We saw lots of pu's with extra tanks and wondered if you had any inside the cab of your vehicle.

Even though our Tundra has a small gas tank, we never had a problem going to and returning from Alaska. Certainly it is good to plan ahead and the Milepost makes that easy. I always had extra gas cans in the pickup bed, but never used them. While the trip takes you through remote areas, civilization has arrived. There are roads well off the usual tourist travels, but there is so much to see, not many people take those roads unless they have lots and lots of time. I expect Brian and SuEllyn may take those roads and will be prepared.

The worst gas issue were stations with even more outrageous prices than usual. Sometimes the word about them travels along the highways and everyone passes on that information so you can avoid those greed heads, but even then I never needed the extra gas. While distances are so great that I wanted to keep traveling to get miles eaten, a stop to get gas when the needle goes below one half is good for your body and mind (a rule I often broke). It is a vacation, after all.

You will meet people who live in the north who sometimes have to travel very far and they are the ones who drive a thousand miles at a time. You can spot them by their bloodshot eyes, pasty skin and shambling walk. Sometimes two guys drive and sleep and do thousands of miles—distances do affect how people act in the north.

An Alaskan trip cost us about a dollar a mile and the biggest expense was by far gas.

Safe travels. We are leaving on our trip to Alaska on Thursday, but we will be visiting family in TN and IN first before heading Northwest. I will keep a lookout for Lucy just in case we cross paths up there.

We just went down and back 2 times this year so far. Once with only our new Tundra and once with our 23 Cb Flying Cloud. The roads are all paved (both Alaska Highway and Cassiar Highway). The section of the Alaska Hwy between Destruction Bay and Tok is full of frost heaves so slow down when you see them. Be prepared for at least one flat tire. Always happens. The Tok Cutoff from Tok to Gakona, Alaska is really bad with frost heaves and construction right now. If you need any advice, just holler.
