Lucy is Finally Back on the Road

Lucy's Covid hiatus has finally come to an end. She is back out on the highways and byways exploring the nooks and crannies of this great country. Lucy is now paired with a new traveling companion. Vivian is Lucy's new tow vehicle. She is a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 pick-up truck. We have had Vivian since March of 2020, but this is her first real outing with Lucy in tow.

We beat our usual crack of noon departure by about an hour and a half. We actually left Santa Rosa Beach at 10:30 this morning. Lucy made her way to Bonifay, Florida via back roads. We stopped in Bonifay where we had lunch at the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket.

We continued north on State and US Highways and crossed into rural Alabama. We hit quite a bit of rain on our route today. We arrived in the Montgomery, Alabama area late this afternoon. We got Vivian fueled up. We decided to call it quits for the day. We located a campground up in Prattville.

Brian

Tonight's pictures include:

- Lucy and Vivian preparing to depart from home.
- The old Bonifay Motor Court, a survivor from the 1930's.
- Downtown Bonifay, Florida.
- The Piggly Wiggly Supermarket in Bonifay.
- Our luncheon companions in the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket.
- Alabama Highway 167 just north of the Florida State Line.
- Lucy at her campsite in Prattville.

Onward to the Tennessee

Lucy had another great day on the road. She started from Prattville, Alabama at a decent mid morning hour. Most of Lucy's travel today was along US 11. We drove through and explored a number of small towns along the route. We saw some interesting sights and countryside along the way. Both Lucy and Vivian are performing very well.

Before the day was over, we made it into Tennessee. Lucy is camped right on the Tennessee River at the Marion Country Park in Jasper, Tennessee.

Brian

Tonight's pictures include:

- A truck on the highway with an interesting company slogan.
- Main Street, Attalla, Alabama.
- The 1949 Etowah Theatre in Attalla.
- Alabama Countryside along US 11.
- The 1946 Cricket Theatre in Collinsville, Alabama.
- Main Street, Fort Payne, Alabama, home of the Alabama Rock Group.
- The 1941 DeKalb Theatre in Fort Payne.
- The 1891 Fort Payne Railroad Depot.
- The 1909 W.B. Davis Hosiery Mill in Fort Payne.
- Arrival at the Marion County Park Campground.

Enjoy and we'll join in vicariously again. The photos are already great as usual. It will be interesting to see how your usual style of finding overnight locations will differ this time out due to changes in the number of campers on the road now.

Have a great trip - but great trips should always go through Texas at some point.

Lucy continues to Virginia

Lucy departed her campground in Jasper, Tennessee, and continued North on US Highway 11 and various state highways. We drove through the Chattanooga area and north through the Tennessee countryside.

We had a very pleasant journey. The back roads provided interesting scenery and a nice drive with very little traffic. We continued to Bristol, Virginia. We found Lucy a very nice campsite at the Sugar Hollow City Park Campground where we made camp for the night.

Brian

Tonight's pictures include:

- Lucy at her campsite in Marion County Park this morning preparing for departure.
- Going through Downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee.
- Main Street, Harriman, Tennessee.
- The 1939 Princess Theatre in Harriman, Tennessee.
- Back road north of Harriman.
- Interesting old barn along the highway.
- Lucy and Vivian at their campsite at Sugar Hollow City Park in Bristol, Virginia.

The trip so far has been surprising. We were concerned about all the extra RV's out there and getting campsites without reservations. We followed our usual routine of trying to find a campsite at around 4:00 PM. We have only been on the road for three nights. As usual, we just looked on RVPARKY for campgrounds nearby, picked out one that looked decent, and gave them a call. We got a site on the first call every time. The first night was a private campground, the second night was a county park campground, and tonight is a city park campground. We hope that our luck continues.

Keep in mind that we travel the back roads. We have seen almost no RV's on our route.

Brian

Another great update and photos, and a good reminder of how and why you end up sharing a new "Slice of Time" with each post, Brian.

Like a history lesson with reassuring echoes from the good ol' days IMO.

I keep being reminded of the work of Walker Evans [hot link in blue] documenting the FSA days of The Great Depression.

So well done, Brian, thanks!

Peter

Lucy has made it to West Virginia

Lucy keeps moving along. She continued through the Virginia countryside on the back roads. It was somewhat slow going on the twisty two lane roads, but the scenery was worth the effort. We are now fully into mountain country. Vivian is doing very well pulling Lucy through the mountainous terrain. We went through a number of neat little towns many of which dated back to the late 1700's

Lucy crossed into West Virginia late this afternoon. After driving for a while through West Virginia, We decided that we would call it quits for the night. We located a nice little campground near Bragg, West Virginia. We got Lucy a nice campsite at the Shady Rest RV Park.

Brian

Tonight's pictures include:

- Virginia countryside.
- Coming into Lebanon, Virginia.
- Entering West Virginia.
- Coming into Union, West Virginia.
- The 1836 Elmwood Estate near Union, West Virginia.
- Nice old barn along the highway.
- Coming into Ronceverte
- The 1787 building in Ronceverte.
- The Girls at their campsite at the Shady Rest RV Park.

It looks like you set Vivian up with the same truck bed topper with the nice outside compartments And a rack on top of that. Is that a functioning air scoop (not the proper verbiage) on Vivian's hood. Does it allow the engine compartment to breath.

Vivian's topper is the very same one that was on Lillian during the Alaska trip in 2019. The roof rack has been there all along. The scoop on Vivian's hood is functional. It is functional of all Duramax Silverados.
