Lucy Has Escaped!
Well, we are at it again. Lucy has finally made her escape from the alley in Santa Rosa Beach, and is on the road. She had been trapped at the beach since February while we were working on a renovation at the Lighthouse.
We actually left the Panhandle last Friday and made our way over to Jacksonville for some business and visiting of kids and grandkids. We laid over an extra day in Jacksonville to wait until Tropical Storm Colin passed through. Lucy blew out of Jacksonville this morning making her way north to Columbia, South Carolina.
Lucy is bedded down here for the night at the Barnyard RV Park in Lexington, South Carolina, just outside of Columbia.
It's great to be on the road again.
Here are some shots from today's travel.

Wish I could be 'trapped' at a panhandle beach for awhile! Photos were nice but you missed the requisite South of the Border billboard... thank you for not showing it. Good to see her back on the road. Safe Travels.

There won't be any South of the Border pictures. We are trying to stay off the Interstates as much as possible.

Lucy got a fairly early start this morning. She was wheels up before 10 AM, which is really early for us. We made our way through the rest of South Carolina, into North Carolina, and onward to Virginia. We covered another 300 miles today. We made camp at Dixie Caverns Campground in Salem, Virginia. We have made it into the higher elevations, and it is noticeably cooler here. It is supposed to go down into the high 50's tonight.
The pictures include:
- Downtown Columbia, South Carolina
- A Publix Supermarket in a historic factory building in Downtown Columbia
- South Carolina State Capitol
- Downtown Charlotte, North Carolina
- Lucy at the Wal-Mart in Elkin, North Carloina
- Virginia mountains in the distance
- SuEllyn made a new friend at the campground
- Airstream at the campground with a really low WBCCI Number

Lucy got going this morning at a decent hour. We spent most of the day paralleling I-81 on US 11. There were a lot of really nice small towns along the way. These are the places that you'll never see if you stick with the Interstates. It makes for a little slower going, but we're retired, so it works for us. Everyone on the Interstate is in so much of a hurry that poor old Lucy almost gets run over several times a minute.
We made our way through the rest of Virginia and crossed into West Virginia late this afternoon. This area is called the Four States. Within 20 miles is Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Campgrounds are scarce in this area, but were able to find a very nice "secret" campground in Kearneysville, West Virginia. It was not on any of our usual campground finding apps. We found it from a highway sign.
Lucy is settled in for the night on a beautiful grass lawn with full RV hook-ups. Lucy had a really great day on the road.
Tonight's pictures include:
- Virginia US 11 countryside
- Lexington, Virginia
- Virginia Military Institute on the campus of Washington and Lee
- A local politician running for office
- Old Diner sign on US 11
- House in Harrisonburg, Virginia
- Kline's Dairy Bar sign in Harrisonburg
- The office at the Campground was very welcoming to Lucy
- Lucy at her campsite
- As darkness fell, Lucy put her lights on

Loving the trip again!
Great pics of America from the small roads. Those small roads are some of our favorites.

Lucy got a late start today. We met another Airstreamer at the campground this morning and spent some time discussing Airstream experiences. We finally left the campground at Noon and continued our trip.
We quickly crossed into Maryland and on to Pennsylvania. We stayed on I-81 most of the day as US 11 had several areas of road construction.
With the late start, Lucy only covered 220 miles today. We made camp for the night at the Petro Truck Plaza in Scranton, Pennsylvania. This truck plaza has 30 amp power available for RV's.
Today's pictures include:
- Old filling station building in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
- coming into Maryland.
- Lucy makes it to Pennsylvania.
- Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
- Lucy's campsite at the truck plaza.
- Lucy made a new best friend at the truck plaza.

On your 300 mile days are you sharing driving? If so, how often do you switch, how many stops do you make? We are trying to decide our distances and driving duties for when retirement allows more travel at hopefully more leisurely pace.
