Lake Powell Lone Rock Camping in the Fall

Thinking of going to Lake Powell Lone Rock Campground this weekend. Planning on staying on the beach. I understand there is water and a dump available.

Can anyone advise on whether it would be a good idea to take our own kayaks or would it be too cold at this point?
Would it be a better idea to do a paid kayak tour instead?
What else is there to do if water is a no go? Is there nearby hiking? Where is Antelope Canyon from there? Thanks!

The lake stays warm into the fall

Assuming that you would go to Bullfrog since that is the nearest to SLC, the National Park campground is very nice with concrete pads and paved roads, though it does not have hook-ups. However, there is a dump station and water available, along with flush toilet facilities. I think this campground is much nicer than the RV park operated by the concessionaire, but it does have hook-ups.

The campground is close to the boat ramp and the shoreline so it would be convenient to launch your kayaks.

Look closely at the maps. Bullfrog Bay is a large wide open body of water and you would have to head downstream on the lake to get to the rock walls.

It has been cooler than normal in AZ this week but it should warm up this weekend. If the wind isn't blowing, and you can make it down to the water without getting stuck, kayaking would be a pleasure without the sun beating down on you. Just be careful picking your route through the beach as getting stuck is a possibility. Wahweap campground is nearby if you want hookups.

Lone rock is very beautiful for camping and Kayaking. The weather is going to be cool and cloudy this weekend and the water is always cold. However, camping right on the beach there will give you the opportunity to launch your kayaks whenever weather seems good for a couple of hours. You won't get stuck unless a serious downpour hits there. This occasionally happens during monsoon season. In fact, NPS evacuated all the campers, including us, out of there after a very strong storm with fast heavy rain during monsoon 2015. They came in with backhoes and we all lined up to pull out. Very well organized and everyone got out with little problem. Do not park your rig close to the edge of an embankment, though, as they have a tendency to collapse from a heavy rain. Shoreline will be fine. There are rangers in kiosk as you drive in and that patrol. Pit toilets right there, but no water or dump. You would have to drive back a few miles to Waweap for that. Antelope canyon is very close, say 15 miles and an amazing place. Make reservations, though. A few tours to chose from. Enjoy the boondocking.

I spend a lot of time there. It looks like the temps will be in the low to mid 60's this weekend which should be fine if its sunny and not windy. It's a nice paddle around the Lone Rock area, though many prefer a paddle to Antelope Canyon and a hike in the back of it. It's the lower part of the canyon where they do the slot canyon tours. If the paddling doesn't work out there are several places to hike (some short like Horeshoe bend- if you haven't seen it you should). If you have a mountain bike you may want to try the Rim View trail, but be wary of the goat heads. It also makes a nice hike if you start at Ridge Way road and go toward the lake.

If you have any kayaking experience I would recommend you skip the tour and either use your kayaks or rent one. My friends run Lake Powell Paddleboards and Kayaks and they rent kayaks, paddleboards, fat tire bikes and do tours. They are also super friendly and informative so it might be helpful to stop by their shop and ask them about hikes and other things to do. They are pretty generous about giving out info and their rentals are pretty reasonable too.

As mentioned water and dump are up at Wahweap campground about 10 minutes away. Wahweap is a nice campground with hook ups.

We paddled there in August. We stayed in one of the rentable airstreams on Wahweap Marina! (now we have our own.) The paddling is great. We were on paddle boards but kayaks even better this time of year when water temps are dropping. Antelope is wonderful. Drive to Antelope point marina, launch, paddle one mile to your left. The canyon is well marked by a buoy. Paddle up this gorgeous canyon, stow your kayak and start hiking. It is beautiful. Not quite as photogenic as the tour but darn close, and you are not herded like cattle. Enjoy and paddle back. The canyon across from Lone Rock beach is fun to explore too. My advice is to get up and go early before the wind and boat traffic pick up.

If you decide to go on the tour, be sure to carry a tripod and SLR camera. They usually take you ahead of the main group and let you take pics before the fine dust gets airborne.
