Sunset sites are up in the dunes above the beach. That's why I'm thinking Seacliff. It's a parking lot on the beach. One section is full hook-ups; next to it is the overflow area, no hookups.

Yes this was Seacliff. Sunset is most defintely not a parking lot and is not on the beach. Seacliff's full hookup sites are in such incredible demand that they feel they can act this way because people will come regardless. These are sites directly on the ocean with full hookups and is the only state park in the state with sites like these. Next to the always taken full hookup sites are "over flow" sites. They are very small and many RV and trailers would not fit. So I am sure they are always throwing people out for being "over the line."

Bottom line is everything on the Monterey Bay is extremely over priced and attitude too. It's insane.

Sorry, the wrong park

After hearing from folks in the know, I dug out the "West Coast RV Camping Guide" and, lo and behold the "receipt" was stuck in the place. It was Seacliff--Sunset is where we ended up. Here's what the book says, under its 10 rating--I've added editorial comments in italics:

"Here is a very pretty spot on the beach if you don't mind camping in an asphalt parking lot along Monterray Bay. Beach walks are great, if you can get past the rabid campground host especially on clear evenings for dramatic sunsets.

It gushes on, but you get the picture. NOTHING about it being a beach parking lot converted to a campground.

And, on the back of the receipt, which of course we didn't really read because, hey, we were their to hang out not read a lonnnng list of rules it defines "self-contained" (I've used the same caps and bolding as on the receipt)

"A SELF-CONTAINED VEHICLE is a vehicle with permanent working plumbing fixtures, flushable toilets, and a sealed effluent holding tank mounted to the vehicle.

The really weird thing, is that they permit tent camping there! Nothing about no whizzing on the beach at night.

You GO girl!! I just love a fired up woman not afraid to use good old fashioned Pilot Speak!! OH I see now, took me a few seconds. The Dreaded 4 " rule, he musta thought you saw him in the nude and were reporting on his lack luster appearance, definately not up to pilot specs. DG

Wow! That is an incredible story. People on power trips really chap me. I experienced a National Park host acting similar but it was about our friends dogs. I think they wouldn't have been happy unless the dogs stopped breathing.

Hey BHW,

"Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ???????" GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm right there with ya DG !! If that had happened to me or someone in my party, They would have DEFINITELY had to call the Sheriff to evict me.

And I probably would have needed bail to re-join the group after THIS!!! . Power trips by the not-so-powerful REALLY tick me off!!!!! (could you tell ?)

Lewster: I was "corrupted" by Doorgunner at the awesome NorCal rally with the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot expression. When he said it, I knew instantly what it meant--even with no military background--and I now intend to use it prolifically. I should have used it with the a**hole at Seacliff, as in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot do you mean I'm 4 inches over the line?

Getting Ready For 1st Trip

Ive read all these posts and although we are in Fl I need to know what we may expect "Streaming". I bought all the guides; Frommers, Trailerlife, Woodhalls, coming tomorrow guides to free camps, Army Corps, BLM. National Geog, etc. I believe I have done the Consumer Report Brain dead aud nauseum! Even went out and bought a Nuvi garmin...in Fl you cant get lost! SO........should I call before hand and use my spiritual psyche to assertain the true Karma...time is precious. We are planning on picking up the 31classic at Colonial on the 29th. Thought going back by way of 81 with jaunts into the foothills only staying in pullthroughs till I get adjusted. Leaving July 1st fo points west on the way to Vancouver Island. Can you take the AS on the ferries? I own a Parker grill....does that get me into the high end parks?

Still Tweaked

Lewster- exactly my point- call the police. These law officers will help keep the peace and take the bimbos sword out of his hands. Then next time he might decide not to be a campground host and ruin everyone's day. Remember the Governator here in Caalifourniiaa wants everyone to enjoy their visit here. And having met BHL and Bill , I'm sure you would win out. But mostly I prefer to handle things myself. It's not like you shot off a spud gun or anything as drastic as that, oh heaven forbid. Road TRIP!!

I suggest you start a new thread with this text. Don't worry, there are lots of awesome places to camp in this great country, they definietly outnumber the lousy spots by a long shot. Just like people, you'll run into a dud campground now and then but be just a bit flexible and enjoy the adventure. The adventures make the best stories. (Some later than sooner.)

I'm inclined to side with DG... pull off a half mile down the road... "recon" the hosts camp and see that his next day or two will be as miserable as he needed to make an innocent camper. Nothing felonious... just irritating... no valve stems in the tires? peanut butter in the locks? okay - i'm feeling much better now
