Keweenaw penninsala

Hey,
We met some airstream folks this weekend up in the UP of Michigan. Sorry you guys we didn't t get to have coffee Saturday morning. We got up and went to breakfast in town and headed out. It was a pleasure meeting y'all. Maybe next time we meet, you'll get to see our 325. What a great place to camp. It's not to busy, quiet, and they got a couple of good food places. We ll be back. For all you folks that have never up in the UP of Michigan, it is really pretty, good people. And the keweenaw penninsala is full of history. Lots of mining lore, and old sites one can visit. Pretty cool. Worth the trip. Did you know that Calumet,mi was once trying to be the capital of the state. And, they had about 130 thousand people living there? You never know it now. It s old and tired looking. Lots of old big houses. The stone work is really cool to see. They built houses to last back then. Anyway it's pretty cool . DJ

That is a beautiful area..... in the summer..... would not want to live there in the winter, though.

We picked up our 1987 Avion 34W just north of Hancock, MI. We were there in mid to late October, just before their first snow. I was really impressed with the beauty of the area. I check a web cam that focuses on a lift bridge across the waterway between Houghton and Hancock..... there are times in the winter that you cannot even SEE the bridge because it is snowing so hard!

The Keweenaw peninsula is on my bucket list. We have been to the eastern part of the UP 3 times in the last 5 years but we havenít made it west of Marquette yet. Next summer for sure.

Here are a couple of photos from the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and a photo of the breakwater at Presque Isle Park in Marquette.

Hey Dan, I am planning on heading to Pictured Rocks and Sleeping Bear this summer.
Were you able to get your rig in any of the NP sites there?
Any other advice?
Thanks!

I am planning on hitting up Keweenaw this summer, and hoping to also take the ferry to spend a few days in Isle Royale. Any further advice on the UP?

Hi

We were up there in mid summer. Bugs? What bugs? Compared to further south not an issue. Site wise, no problem finding places to camp. We did a mix of Harvest Hosts, National Forests, and State Parks. All of it was very pretty.

I heard the bugs were bad early summer, starting in June. Thanks for the info.

Tomfeury and others-

Bugs- We were in the pictured rocks area 5 years ago around July 4. The black flies and mosquitoes were terrible. We camped at 12 Mile Beach and other NF campgrounds- no relief. We finally snagged a spot at the city park in Munising. No bugs. We stayed there the rest of our vacation. The locals said to come after July 15.

Travel Information- Stop at the visitors center just after going over the Mackinac Bridge. Then head west on route 2. After 10-15 miles stop at the Hiawatha NF office and get a map and camping information.

Bay Furnace (Munising)- we camped there last summer. They stay full all summer. The best 2 or 3 sites are on the water and reservable. Snag one of those if you can. We showed up early in the morning and were lucky to get a non reservable site (see photo).Click image for larger version

NP sites- they are now all reservable. No sites are non reservable. If you want non reservable then try the NF and SF sites in the area.

Woodland Park Campground- This is the city park in Grand Marais. All sites are non reservable. If you get there early in the week you will be able to get an electric and water site and can stay for up to two weeks.
If you get there late in the week or the weekend, the e&w sites may be full but there will always be non hookup sites available. We camped in one of those (A7).

Call me at 434-401-4060 if you have any questions.
