Is Morro Bay, Ca to Felton, Ca a doable

I'm starrting to fine tune my plans for driving the Pacific Coast Hwy this summer. See my thread from last summer. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/rv-parks-pacific-coast-hwy-29207.htm

I am thinking of staying in Felton, and would like to drive there from Morro Bay. I think it's about 160 miles from point to point. If I stay on PCH is this too much distance to consider towing my 34', or should I plan to drive 101?

101 Yes

Although Hwy 1 is very beautiful its not that easy towing a 34ft A/S. too many white knukles with opposing traffic. do have a favorite park in felton that we like called Cotillion Gardens and spot 46 is very nice. You are all alone with the creek behind and and the street side with a wood deck and tall redwoods all around. Our very very special park is Sea Cliff State park in Aptos. fav spots 26 and spot #2, least fav is spot #12 buy the trash and restrooms, reservation thru reserve America. We have to reserve 7 months in advance

Yes it's doable.
NO - I wouldn't take Hwy 1, take 101 instead. Your rig will be too big for the section between Cambria and Monterey. You could go up Hwy 1 to Hwy 46 then east to 101 in Paso Robles.

I failed miserably at reservation america trying for a spot at Morro Bay SP over July 4 weekend. I will miss staying at some beautiful SP's because I won't try it again.

Thanks for the info on the PCH and Cotillion Gardens.

Felton

Here is a pic of space #46. Also there is a lumber mill close by that allows you to get FREE fire wood cuttings. Also must do's the old logger train either up the mountain or down to the pier in Santa Cruz, both are great. A must eat is Shadowbrook restaruant, cable car down to entrance, window views for romantic atmoshpere, fav filet that you can cut with fork, about 25min. from Felton.

We also love New Brighton in Capitola. Not on the beach but in the trees and a short walk down to the water. Sunset SB is also nice. Seacliff is right on th water but you are pretty well jammed into you spot. We like the extra room.

If staying in Morro Bay area, you might try Montana de Oro State Park (Calif) It is a little way from Morro Bay (just down the coast a few miles)... I haven't been in there in a long time, but used to love it as it was much quieter than the other parks. Used to have a funky road in/out but that was many years ago. Also just out of Felton, closer to Scotts Valley is Henry Cowell State Park. It is a wonderful park to visit. We used to live a stone's throw from there so we never camped there. Very wonderful redwoods.

I agree, towing your long trailer I wouldn't go the whole distance up Hwy 1. Unfortunately you will miss some of the very best coastline in California... be sure and take a day trip or two and drive up at least to Hearst Castle in Cambria from Morro Bay. You can cut over to the coast at Salinas and hit Monterey if you would like... good camping at Laguna Seca right outside of Monterey along with other commerical spots.

Sounds like you will have a great trip! Summer along this part of the coast in California is not always the warmest time... August in Monterey and Santa Cruz can be very foggy and cold. It can also be quite warm...

Have fun!
