In Missouri at Rte 66 KOA

Just enjoying our 8th day on the road with a stop at the KOA west St. Louis. Very nice set up. Originally we were going to head down Rte 66 but given the heat wave we'd be headed into, we're going to beat feet to Denver with a stopover in Kansas somewhere off I-70. Anyone have suggestions of a campground?

Neighbor from Chatham here.

I was barn ( born ) in St. Louis.

News from back east. Eastern Pennsylvania had tornado warnings today. It's been very cool here. A heat wave coming could mean more " windy "conditions.

I remember tornadoes really liking to visit Missouri. And it seems like they like trailer parks too. Keep an eye on the weather, and don't drive down any yellow brick roads.

Original question

Topeka to Salina

Covered Wagon RV Park off Exit 275 is your stopover if you want to explore Dwight D. Eisenhower's hometown of Abilene. The park has space for horses, two golf courses, nature trails and geocaching in addition to the presidential library and museum.
Salina has two good-sized RV parks: Sundowner West off Exit 244 and a KOA off Exit 252. Both have free Wi-Fi, pull-through sites, paddle boats and swimming.

Salina to Hays

The Fossil Creek RV Park at Russell, midway between Salina and Hays, is just off I-70 Exit 184. Russell is the hometown of Bob Dole, who ran for president against Bill Clinton in 1996. If you happen to pass by during the last week of July, enjoy the Russell County Free Fair, a taste of "the good old days."
If geocaching is your thing, reserve an RV site at one of the state campgrounds near Hays for the annual Kansas Geocaching Contest that starts in early May and continues to November. Neither of the private campgrounds close to I-70 in Hays is recommended. Go on past Exit 135 to Exit 127 to find a place worth stopping.

Hays to Oakley

Exit 127 at Wakeeney/Hayes will bring you to a KOA with free wireless Internet where you can get some exercise on their pedal go-karts or the nearby golf course. The KOA is open March 15 to November 1.
High Plains Camping, off Exit 70 near Oakley, has hot tubs and a dog run. In season, you can pick your own veggies and melon from its organic garden and play mini-golf. The park brews fresh-roasted Kansas coffee every day. Geocachers will find GC1HM6J somewhere on the property.

The metro St. Louis area has a lot of different dialects. What's particularly interesting is the southern twang which enters into residents voices in the rural counties that abut to the metro counties. Then you have the ongoing pronunciation of Missouri. The rural out state areas tend to say Missourah, while those of us in the urban say Missouree. The governor walks a real tightrope and he is very aware of where he is and how he pronounces Missouri when he visits and speaks in different locales.

The route 66 KOA is about 8 miles west of my home. Stay dry! We've set a record for the wettest June in history. 13+ inches of rain. More on the way starting tonight.

I know that Brad (BLMitch) stayed at a cute little city/county campground last year in Ellis KS on their way to Colorado. You can maybe search his screen name for the thread.

If you get near the Manhattan, Ks area I suggest Milford Lk. Corps of Eng campground. No hookups but at $4/night I can't complain. And the best part is if you have the NP access pass it's only $2. Can't beat that. We stayed there a few years ago in late August and were the only ones in the whole place. Farther west is Wilson Lk. haven't been there but Corps site also.

Scarlet if you aren't in a hurry and would like to see more than just I-70 as you head west swing north to pick up US-36 and take that west. See the small towns, enjoy the multiple museums on the route. If you don't need full hookups it's an easy drive to Atwood which has power and water, no sewer at the Lions Park. Then an easy drive the next day hooking into I70 close to Denver.

Pony Express museum in Marysville, KS and for something very unique and wonderful the Paul Boyer Museum of Animated Carvings in Belleville, KS will simply leave you speechless. www.kansastravel.org/boyergallery.htm

I have stayed at a nice state park in El Dorado, KS, but that is too far off your path.

If you are heading west on HWY 70, take a detour and visit Arrow Rock and Blackwater. Very quaint and worth the trip. Just a little west of Boonville, MO

Camping In Kansas

It's hard to go wrong with Milford Lake (near Ft. Riley), nor Wilson Lake, farther west. I have stayed at both numerous times, although it has been a few years. The place I stayed at Milford Lake was on top of a hill and had water and electricity. There was usually a nice breeze there in the evening and a nice place to walk. The campground at Wilson Lake is right on the lake and has water and electricity. Both places a a few miles off the interstate, but to me they are worth the drive. I plan on stopping at Wilson Lake in a couple of weeks.

I second Gary's suggestion. Rt. 36 is a very nice easy driving road. And just for the novelty of it you can take a short detour outside of Lebanon, KS to the geographical center of the Continental US. A good photo opportunity but nothing more so go for it. I've driven 36 the full width of KS and MO.

Roger I drove 36 from Jackson Center all the way to Denver last fall. It was a great trip. One section of 36 was a divided highway but most was two lane in great shape much more interesting than I70.

We stayed at Milford lake COE two weeks ago. We had a spot on the lake near the entrance reserved, but the weather was cool and the non electric/no water section was empty so we switched down there and had the entire section to ourselves. Lake views and all. Beautiful. Would recommend. Then we went to Cedar Bluff state park south of Hays and Ellis KS. It was nice... Nothing spectacular... But nice. Hotter than hell, but the AC kept us comfortable. It's prob 30 min from I70 to Cedar Bluff and your GPS will take you past the real entrance to the south section... Don't be fooled... Check their directions or call ahead if you go there.
