I have been using e-pass which is the former name of the same service. It has been extremely reliable and has worked on toll roads up and down the East Coast.

I thought the Illinois Tollway had been leased to a private company in 2019, but I can't find anything about it that I don't have to buy a subscription for.

I did find something else that surprised me. The tollway provides information to divorce lawyers and police.

Rich you are correct. The MVD/DMV information is shared much more widely than we all imagine. Most municipalities don't even process their own paperwork.

Thumbs down

The Il tollway is owned & administered by state of Il. The Chgo. toll skyway was leased or sold to investors for 1.9 billion I believe 1996, then. sold to Canadian group for 2.8 billion 2004.this was Chgo doings orig. by Richard Daly former mayor of Chgo. The Il tollway has nothing to with skyway.

EZPass from Mass. = no monthly fee

We got an EZ Pass from Massachusetts although we live in Michigan because MA does not charge a monthly fee on the balance. Some states do charge a monthly. Do some research. You do not need to live in the state you register the transponder. EZPass works in the I-pass areas in Illinois as well and the Indiana and Ohio toll roads. Depending on how you travel, You may need two transponders: One for the tow vehicle+trailer, another for the tow vehicle alone if you anticipate traveling on toll roads after parking.

I passed through the tollway close to the Indiana boarder while towing back in early October. Like others I found the tollbooths were not open. I saw the sign about paying tolls via their website and registered an account with a credit card. I'm not sure which plate they took a photo of but I gave them the plate of my tow vehicle (they don't have a setup or catagory for the trailer plate). There was at the time a 14 day grace period to pay the tolls without a penalty. I signed up on day 9. At this point I've been checking and they have not yet charged the tolls to my account. It will be interesting to see how this goes over time.

I no longer go through any of Illinois because of their tolls

There was one of those entrances that had change only and I had no change so I figured that they would send a bill like they do here in Texas.

By the time they sent a bill it had an $80 late fee attached to it, I wrote them a letter explain the situation and they indicated that if I did not pay it they would seek to take away my drivers license so Illinois can kiss my....

My question for anyone who might know is if there any way to get these fees waved? Im sure I missed something but the booths were unmanned. Ive called and was on hold and left a number to get called back twice. Not a peep.

There are numerous signs at every toll plaza in IL telling drivers that they have 7 days to pay online if they don't pay at the plaza. No change? Just make note of the toll plaza number and pay online later on with no penalty.

Avoiding IL? Not always that convenient - imagine driving from Wisconsin to Indiana (or points east) without going through IL?

I use my navigation system and I tell that to avoid all toll roads. Simple fix. I’m not paying $75 to ride on the toll road thru Pennsylvania, for example, and that’s without any penalties. Most highways run parallel to the toll roads

Toll roads

Well, after reading all of the above posts, I have decided to avoid traveling to the East coast and all of those toll states.

I will just stay in the Mountain West and enjoy free roads.

So Illinois, Indiana, etc. will just have to miss out on my tourist dollars. Too bad, guys!

We did the East in Fall of '2018. Only a couple of tollroads but more toll bridges. It was not enough to be a big bother or to make me stay away.

My main gripe is that the NY toll road wasn't in very good shape. I wonder what shape the non-toll highway was in?

In NYS the EZpass, is good on all vehicles that they have the plate number on file for.
I drove our '53 Ford thru two tolls with the Burb's EZpass, got a fine notice, called, explained what happened, gave them Bertha's plate number. Paid the missed toll and the fine was forgiven.

You must be a god of some sort calling NY EZ Pass and getting a person. I am still waiting on my 4 email requests for clarification from 4 years ago when I still lived there.
As a side note, I have 5 ez passes, 4 for car and one for truck with trailer. I have loaned the car passes out to friends, mixed them up between my vehicles and always had them accepted. I do have auto renewal on a credit card so they know they are getting their money. The only issue I had was one got lost 4 years ago and somehow made a charge last June across the Newburgh/Beacon Bridge. My guess is the folks who bought our house found it and tossed it in the trash so it triggered a toll. Went online, paid my $16 lost/stolen tag fee now don't have to worry. The other 4 I have here and use when I go back east or areas where EZ Pass is accepted. Getting one in NY through the Thruway authority carries no annual fee. I think if you get one in and around NY City they may charge you an annual fee.

BTW the NY Thruway just went cashless.
Pay cash by mail and it's 30% more.
FWIW... it was a 20min phone wait.

My EZ Pass is through Illinois - Don't remember any wait to talk to them the last time I called, and there are walk-up counters at the Oasis on the toll road in the Chicago area (closed now due to shut-down).

Toll roads are as old as our country, and I'm glad that we've finally been able to get past the toll booth and having to carry a bucket of coins with us. Lots of options for those who would rather avoid them, it all depends on your priorities when traveling.

There is 1 good thing about Il. tollways. It is open rd. tolling, that means you can go thru the lanes that honor transponders w/out stopping to pay. People go thru some times up to 80 mph or more even if posted 55 or lower, sure saves lots of time over old way, long lines wear & tear on veh. fuel mileage etc. plus a little less fare than using cash boxes.
