I use a short bungee cord looped around the top with the ends in the small hoes in the cap. When we get home I am going to figure out some thing else: drill a hole for a clip perhaps. Lousy design.

Traveling along I 10 we stopped for fuel. The pump card reader wasn't working so I had to go inside @Pilot. On the walk back out to the rv lane I noticed the tube wagging in the wind under the airstream. One screw was missing and the other was there, though the tab on the tube was broken. The other screws midpoint under the airstream were still attached. Took out my large patio mat and my 1/4" ratchet set and proceeded to remove the last two screws. Tossed the tube in the back of the truck. We weren't using the tube for hose storage, use a sportsman trunk from Bass Pro ($10) to store hoses and fittings. Much easier to drop it on the ground near where you are working and you can slide it under the rig when you're stationary for a while.
First thoughts while removing...why didn't airstream use rivnuts when attaching this tube instead of just running big sheetmetal screws into the underbelly covering. Not sure if something hit the tube while travelling, or if a screw dropped out and the wind did the rest of the damage. Picked up a tube of silicone sealant and covered up the holes to keep any water out. Now there is nothing underneath hanging around to catch debris on the road and rip it off. If that is what originally happened.

Twice I found the cap dangling and hanging by it's rubber lanyard. Luckily the hose was still in the carrier. I modified the cap before my luck ran out.
Wrapped a large 18" cable tie around the carrier. Drilled holes in the cap and threaded a piece of small bungee cord through the cap. Secured each end of bungee cord under the cable tie.
When closed, the cap is held in the closed position by the bungee cord.
To open, I simply twist the cap open and move it below the carrier.

My new Classic had a spray paint black stripe that went from the lid to the plastic pipe that the lid locked on to. When you put on the lid the black mark was to the left of the black mark on the pipe. Then you turned the lid clockwise to line its black mark with the mark on the pipe. Now my pipe was white. Obviously with a black pipe and lid you would use a different color. I always thought that Airstream did that at build time. Maybe that was something my dealer did on prep to help us? Those marks are still there almost 17 years later. I still use them and have never had a lid come open on me.

Lost my sewer hose somewhere in Colorado on Route 160. Now the storage lid has a sheet metal screw that holds it from turning.
Installed a new spare storage tube and it has a latch to prevent it from opening.

Great tips. My kids joke about all of bad words they have learned from me trying to get this cap on and off.
Regularly washing out dirt, using a silicon lubricant and paying attention to where the lid fits in all help but only so much!

We use a small carabiner in the lock hole our Valterra has to keep it closed. So far so good.

Everything goes in the bumper storage for the tanks. I use the tube underneath to store the hitch bars and pins when trailer is unhitched.

Think of it as "Musical Chairs Jackpot."
You lost a basic Camco hose, but found a nice RhinoFlex. You win!
Hoses are like socks, eventually they escape.

I like Runamuks idea. I think I ought to be able to handle that myself. My cap was left dangling twice my last trip out. I think it is all in order, not broken or anything and I took extra care to insure that it was properly seated. I didnt want to lose my hose so to get home I put a small piece of skid cloth overlapping part of the edge of the cap as a spacer before twisting it in place. It took up any slack and kept the cap snug while providing some resistence to turning. It held.
