If you could go ANY place … ???

We are planning our 2022 spring and fall road trips. We usually spend 2-4 weeks going somewhere and returning, stopping at lots of interesting places along the way. Starting from St. Louis.

After all the places you’ve been, where did you like the most or where would you revisit?

Depends

This depends on many things. Are you big attraction kind of folks, or are you happier in low key, but cool locations. Month of travel (even time of month) is key for me. Do you like to go to one or few places and hang out or are you National Lampoon Grand Canyon viewers? Are you biased west or east? Giving good advice is impossible without that information.

Some off the cuff ideas:
  • Big Horn Mountains.
  • Anywhere in east Utah.
  • Most of NM.
  • Big Bend NP.
  • Yellowstone/Tetons.
  • Panhandle of Idaho
  • Badlands NP.

I like to fly fish. Bozeman, Grand Teton, Livingston, RedLodge and YNP. Any where on the west coast. Brookings, Long Island, Astoria, Florence, Cresent city, Lincoln city. Squim and the Olympic Pen. Bend and Sisters. The Columbia river gorge. My wife's favorite is camping in Grand Teton doing absolutely nothing. Closer RMNP is great. Pretty much anything in Colorado west of Denver. Grand junction to Moab and down to Durango is good. Up the western shore of Lake Superior. UP of Michigan.

We pretty much can go anyplace. But most of anyplace is a long drive for us. I do not know how to think in terms of a 2 to 4 week trip. Those above are the things that pop to mind right away from the last 10 years or so. I have found things we like on every trip anywhere so far. And a few we did not. I would stay away from 4 corners, for instance.

Kinda out if the way, s edge of vandenberg afb. Drop anchor for a few days...or more, great grub a the local shack. If you're adventurous, a long beach walk to pt conception for s view of the socal coast and santa catalina isl.

If you're not into relaxing with a beachfront ocean view, take a pass and stay in Paso Robles at wine country rv and taste some local wine. From a Sonoma co ex pat, same quality, inc old zins like Sonoma city but no crowds.I

A trip East could take you to Niagara, the Thousand Islands, The White Mountains (go up Mt. Washington, it's awesome), and Coastal Maine, maybe even Acadia.

Then head home through Pennsylvania Amish Country, West Virginia and Kentucky.

If you time it right, you could find yourself at https://www.fiverivercampground.com/...n-parsons.html

And you could do Cumberland Gap and Mammoth Cave on the way home.

Any place?

We travel a little differently than some, usually avoiding the State & National Park systems. Our 'thing' is exploring small-town America, so if I could go to any place it would be the next unexplored small town off the beaten path in search of the best diner in the country.

It would be "Australia". Some years ago, I and a buddy of mine put together a trip to Australia. It was simple, two groups (A/B) of 5-10 couples, pair-up to buy a vintage Airstream (25+ years) together to help split the cost. We were going to lease Toyota Landcruiser's from a dealership, the trailers would be shipped and get in country, Group A would fly to Australia and spend 2-3 weeks traveling the country. When A finished, B would fly into country and travel back along the same route in reverse, then selling the trailer to a group there that sold vintage trailers. In the end, based on the numbers, the trip would have paid for itself.

Maybe someday,

Now THIS is a travel plan! Having been to Australia over a dozen times on business before retiring, I would change this trip to 2-3 months! Oz is huge and there is much to experience.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

Wyoming, for sure. We have brought the Airstream there every year since 2006. We especially like the Bighorn National Forest. near Sheridan.

Brian

I am almost reluctant to tell people about the BHs for fear that they will be overrun. I think everyone being in a mad rush to or from Yellowstone/Tetons is what protects them.

Badlands. Tetons. Glacier. Put New Zealand on your bucket list. We rented a motorhome there and drove the islands for 3 weeks. Unforgettable.

Another Perspective

As the leader of the 2022 Show me the Ozarks, I would add this AS Caravan as a possible destination for several reasons:
1. You are close to the starting point of Mt View, AR
2. All suggestions I read only include the two of you, while a caravan includes 25 other AS's with opportunity to make great friends during this 28 day adventure.
3. Little planning on your part is required to participate in a caravan.

This year we had participants from St Louis, California, Massachusetts and alot of other states. We had a great time!

New Zealand. Rented an RV and spent 3 weeks circling the south island. NZ is very well setup for RV camping, and is beautiful beyond compare. We found the "Kiwis" to be very friendly and welcoming.

BRITISH COLUMBIA! The INTERIOR. The small towns of Revelstoke, Golden, Kimberly, Fernie, Nakusp, all of which are on or near the "Hot Springs Loop"..... not far from the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Banff.....

The Black Hills, The Redwoods north of San Francisco, any of the "Mighty Five" National Parks in Utah, Northern New Mexico (Taos, Santa Fe, Chama, Abiquiu), the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Sonoran Desert around Tucson, the Coast of Oregon. The big old WEST.....

Anywhere in California, especially the corridor of the 395 on the eastern scarp of the Sierra Nevada...
