I just got cancelled!
I just received an e-mail from ReserveAmerica.gov that my reservation at Sawnee campground near Buford, Ga. has been cancelled.
Not a lot of detail but the note said the campground was closed until May 31 "due to administration"? whatever that means.
I'm bummed, I found a really nice spot with power and water. They did refund my money.
Looks like it's closed until June1. I went back and was able to reserve the same site starting then.

Hmmmmm.
All I know is national parks and such are way understaffed currently and treading water. Maybe funds were diverted to "some other 'emergency' gov project"
But, there are plenty of other nice spots with hookups out there. Or just go on an extended road trip somewhere you haven't been yet; you may just wind up having the time of your life! Our private secluded cabins have wheels!!

I can think of where the money went but I don't want to wax political!
I digress.
The Reserve America site shows all the campsites closed for those weeks. I'm guessing it's some construction projects, maybe.
Anyway, I pushed it back a month and re-registered. The advantage of being unemployed.
NOTE: The Reserve America website seems to have become more tedious. I just made a reservation, and when I entered "Sawnee" Or "Buford, Ga." or any combination of terms, it said it had no Idea. Then It asked if I wanted to peruse the STATE parks. Then it listed the private campgrounds near Buford, Ga, but didn't show the COE campground on the map that I had a reservation for!!!

There's been quite a bit of news coverage here regarding the high water levels at Lake Lanier and also Allatoona. I suspect that's what's behind the delayed opening of those parks this year.

Thanks for the tip.
You're right! It took me right to my campsite... almost.
I'm adding a bookmark for COE sites. This year I'm branching out away from private parks. Not exactly boon docking, but more state, and COE.
Wait. The fog is lifting. I got cancelled on Recreation. gov. but then tried to re-book on Reserve America and got all twisted when it didn't work!!
You're a genius, and it made my day!

It is Beaufort, not Buford, which may also help your searches.

Well, maybe. Buford is in Georgia near Lake Lanier and the Corp of Engineers camp grounds on lake Lanier. It is northeast of Atlanta. https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232700
Beaufort is in South Carolina on the coast. An other fine place to go.

Which is 180 degrees out from what it was a short time ago. They were having boat ramps where the paving stopped many feet before the water.

Sure the National Parks are having budget problems. However the COE, Corp of Engineers parks are separate from the NPs. Yes they have budget problems but you will recall when the government was "shut down" the Corp of Engineers parks were open. Its "different" money.

MD, we were there over presidents weekend and essentially had the place to ourselves. There are onsite hosts, that also work the gates. I'll look to see if i have the phone number for the gate. I booked directly with the cg. We were at shoal creek, but i think there is another cg under the same margaritaville at lake lanier umbrella.

We've seen campgrounds around here closed due to weather, other conditions (high water, fire danger, rock/mud slides, logging, special events), lack of funding and missing personnel. One of our favorites used to be open all year, but management has decided to open for summer only -so Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Around here, some closed camps still have room and access, you can park if you'd like but you will be boondocking and others are shut up tight with blockades at the entrance and dire warnings.
If you don't mind boondocking, usually a quick conversation with a local ranger will guide you in the best possible location if the usual choices are limited.

We like Georgia State Parks. Here's a new one on Lake Lanier:

We've stayed there twice and really like it.

BTW shoal creek cg at Lake lanier, near Buford is as i understand it is a COE lake but privately managed as part of the margaritaville at lanier lake operation.

Camping Lake Lanier
Closed because of water level.
Try Duckett Mill Campground. It’s a COE Park.Almost all sites have great water views and if a senior half price. Almost no bad sites😃
