We've had two instances recently, both while camping at a state park, that our neighbors were very noisy.

The latest instance was a car arriving to a site next to us, around 10:30pm (quiet time). A couple of twentysomethings got out and played their car stereo while setting up their tent.

There was no ranger in sight and the camphost didn't seem to care much.

Both times we ended up moving: we unhooked water and electricity and towed our AS to an empty site, away from the noise makers.
Very frustrating but what can you do...

Hi, what can you do about noisy neighbors? Pretty much, nothing. Put up with it or leave. We have had a few times with noisy neighbors and were glad that it was only a one night stand.

You can ask them (nicely) to turn it down a little, but some may find that uncomfortable or too confrontational. In that case, just take a walk to the CG host or ranger and ask them to remind the offenders about the quiet time restrictions. If that doesn't work your best solution may be to find a different spot and hope some other jerk doesn't set up camp next to you. It really sucks when there are a bunch of rowdy campers around that disturb the peace and quiet we are trying to find when camping.

Tell them what the campground rules are. Tell them they are required to turn it off.

You need to be 100% calm, but 100% assertive. Be short, clear and to the point. Don't accuse, don't threaten, don't yell, and also don't apologize for your request. You paid your money too and are entitled to the quiet time.

Ex: "Hi. I am your neighbor here. The camp rules are that after 10PM is quiet time. It's 10:30 and you are required to turn off that radio. Thank you - we appreciate it. "

99% of the time, people will be fine with your request. Maybe they grumble when you leave, but so what?

The vast, vast majority of people in the USA love authority. When you are calm and assertive and clear, they will see it as authority that they are used to. You'll be regarded as the ranger.

I've found that disrobing and walking around your site in the 'buff' (

) as the offenders begin to set up their gear, usually causes them to move on to another site...

Same thing you do with noisy neighbors in an apartment complex. Walk over and politely ask them to turn it down.

Then if that doesn't help, call the authorities. Usually when you check into a State Park, one piece of information they give you is who to call if you need police or ambulance services.

use the baby sleeping excuse.

"Hi neighbor. We have a baby sleeping right over there. Would you mind turning the music down a little".
Calling them neighbor is friendly.
down a little is less threatening than just down.
It works the first night. Then they find out you have no baby. opps.

I've found the best solution is windows closed, air conditioner on.

No confrontation, and I can't hear them. Sleep better with the A/C on anyway.

I've got this huge yellow flashlight that can shine a beam hundreds of yards. A couple of years ago when a crowd of young people were partying late next to us, I took that flashlight and placed the beam on the ground between me and them. The beam wasn't high enough to be considered threatening, but stopped the young folks from seeing me or evaluating me. They didn't know if I was a camper, a ranger or ten rangers. All they heard was a firm, command voice from behind the immense light ordering them to be quiet. Not an angry voice, just a clear command voice. They immediately quieted down. My wife calls that "hitting them with the big yellow."

Bess has a nice, bright spotlight. That usually gets the wild bunch's attention. After years of camp hosting, we've found calling the locals to put down their doughnuts and do a "drive-through" has got everything quieted-down. County parks are the most obnoxious, and personally taking the "quiet time" rule to the drunks is asking for trouble.

We were at Lost Dutchman State Park (AZ) a some years ago when a family with older boys came in next to us drinking, arguing, and having rifle practice. Contacted the host who would not confront them, but called local police who promptly responded and canceled their visit. Host said it had become too dangerous to confront these types; the year earlier a policemen was shot and killed there responding to an incident.

So proceed carefully, these characters have their own version of their rights and sometimes have firearms to protect those rights.

You won't experience that in Canada. Canadians like to be in their jammies - curled up in front of the TV with Peter Mansbridge and "The National" by 10.

We are looking forward to camping in Canada in the future. Always wanted to visit the Great White North in our AS. And we know we won't run into any noisy neighbors in the campgrounds.

Time for bagpipe practice . . tuning and scales should take the first hour. Between drinks.

Scales? You don't need to play scales to run someone off. With a couple of good drone pipes you can annoy the hell out of them and keep your hands free for the uisge beatha.
