Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort

Any else notice they changed enforcement of rules and now don’t allow anything over 90 inches in width? Effectively banning most Airstreams. Really sad about it because we really liked it as a great place for long weekend escapes from Charlotte.

Interesting. Class A’s are certainly much wider than 8’ with slides deployed. This must be a method of excluding certain clientele rather than a facility restriction. Too bad. We have enjoyed staying there in the past.

90”? That would exclude most RV’s of any make! That doesn’t even make sense - it’s not like a wider rig causes extra maintenance. Did the management decide they were working too hard for their pay?

I checked the rule using Google Translate. In plain English it means: “We don’t want 5th wheels or bumper-pull trailers in our campground”.

We had friends in Bluffton and stayed at camped at Hilton Head Harbor a number of times. If we are not good enough for them, they are not good enough for us. Good riddance.

Yes, we had stayed there several times, was planning to stay again This April, noticed the restriction and called them, they confirmed the restriction was out in place last fall. The person I talked with said no exceptions. We booked further away from the island at Lake jasper, an awesome set of grounds with great walking trails.

Here is a contradiction to there rule. I went to Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort home page and right there is a picture of an Airstream in the graphic for RATES.

Just for yuks, I googled this RV Resort, and this is what their reservation page says...

“Due to our POA covenants, we do not accept pull behind travel trailers with slides or 5th wheel travel trailers with slides and they cannot exceed 35ft in length or 8 ft in width in their fully installed condition (which are to include tip outs and slide outs).”

Unless basic math has changed, “8ft in width” still equals 96 inches.

That seems pretty darned wide, to me, and more than your average trailer...minus slide outs, of course.

Almost every private campground has a sign that says they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.

In this case, they are citing their Property Owners Association for the restrictions.

I just want to say that I don’t really understand the upset over this.

Motorhomes are exempt from the slide out, length and width rules.

8 feet is 96 inches, but most current Airstreams are 8 feet 5.5 inches = 101.5 inches

Wow.

One of the basic rules that guide and draw some of us to the “littles” is that we can park and get in most anywhere.

That’s why we are devoted to them.

So bigger isn't always better...we'd be 'good to go' in our vintage which is only 86" wide. For once it isn't an age discrimination issue.

My wife and I are property owners at this resort and have knowledge of the situation. I hesitate to share much publicly as there are currently active legal proceedings.

The Property Owners Association has in fact voted to update the outdated covenants relative to RV size and width.(very old parts of the covenants, back to the resort's origin, seemingly intended to prevent the park from permitting park models) It is the owner of the rental office who must sign off on the changes already passed by the POA, and refuses to do so.

It is a confusing situation, involving several aspects, having prior legal issues reaching South Carolina Supreme Court, and requires rather lengthy discussion for one to ascertain the truth of what is really going on. PM me if interested.

It may be under 'discussion' however... on the web site, the line preceding the above quoted clause states the limitation applies to slide equipped, non-motorized units and does NOT apply to Class A, B or C with slides. No age limit is stated but the trailer width limit does preclude the newer wide-body (8' 5 1/8") Airstreams built after 1995 even though all Airstream trailers are under the 35' length restriction.

The full rule:

"We accept bumper pull travel trailers, 5th wheel travel trailers, hybrid campers and motor coaches. We cannot accept park models, destination trailers or tents or travel trailers that exceed our size limits.

Due to our POA (property owners association) covenants, we do not accept pull behind travel trailers with slides or 5th wheel travel trailers with slides and they cannot exceed 35ft in length or 8 ft in width in their fully installed condition (which are to include tip outs and slide outs)."
