Help from you Texans!

SilverLeaf is on a very unusual trip. No exact itinerary, no exact duration. At Day Four I don't think I am thinking of NEVER going home! I am visiting friends in San Antonio, and want to go to Padre Island for 4-5 days. Do any of you out there have a recommendation for a great park? I have one of my two basset hounds with me. I could boondock if someone has a super great recommendation where I'd need to be independent of hookups. Thanks!

The National Park Service operates a park on the Island that is a short distance outside of Corpus Christi. It would be my first choice, and the private campgrounds nearer Port Aransas would be second.

Malaquite Beach

The weather is very good this week to be outdoors, spectacular, in fact, given what it can be.

Goose Island, for a few more days.

Also, search for a long thread around here on Corpus Christi, Rockport and Padre Island for more info/experience.

Hey, Barry!

Glad to see you made it to Texas!

We love to boondock on the beach at Padre Island NS near Corpus Christi.

So beautiful, and there is a water fill and dump station there.

Have a great time, and post pictures!

Texas state parks are hard to beat.
Texas Parks & Wildlife Department | State Parks

If you are going to visit a lot of parks then buy the yearly pass for $70. I pays for the daily fees and you get 4 nights of 1/2 price campsite fees. Most parks have campsites with water and electricity.

Much better than staying at private "parking lot" RV parks.

Following are a couple links to Cameron County parks on South Padre Island:

The following two parks are located near Port Aransas on Mustang Island:

The following LCRA park is not on North Padre Island nor South Padre Island but is only a couple hours up the coast from North Padre Island, is one of our favorite places to camp, is a very quiet beach location and is also the best beach in Texas for collecting shells:

We stayed at the Nueces County Park in Port Aransas. Its right behind the dunes and the camper dedicated shower and restroom facilities were great. We went on June and it was hot and windy, but this time of year should be great

A word of caution to you BAB if you camp at Matagorda Bay Nature Park, the undertows near the mouth of the Colorado River can be deadly ... I was born in Palacios, just a few miles down the coast, spending plenty of summer days on Matagorda beach. We took our maiden voyage in our new/old Airstream last summer ... to Texas in August. Thanks for your continued service to our future leaders at WPMA.
