Coming up to the Continental Divide yet?

The Gila National Forest looks like a good place for boondocking maybe?

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ch...4d-108.2252884
https://www.fs.usda.gov/gila

Amazing how many tributaries of the Colorado River run WNW through AZ:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colora...vermapnew1.jpg

The Gila River is near the bottom, and runs close to Phoenix.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gila_River

There may be some dam fine sites nearby?

Safe travels.

Peter

PS -- Thanks for the recent photos etc..

Thank you, Peter. I am visiting family in Tucson soon. That might just work!

I spent a night at Guadalupe Mountain NP and it was very pretty. The campground is just a parking lot with no hookups but it is beautiful and quiet and has very nice trails so I think it is worth $8/$4.

And they have also got some real nice picnic areas on 62 near the park if ya don't wanna stop at the park.

And all over the west they have got all these old abandoned cafes and stores and resorts and RV parks and all sorts of abandoned things. And I wonder what these places were like when they were runnin.

Looks great -- very interesting places you find all over the country, including this very peaceful stopping point, which lets you head west again without much fuss.

As you go west on I-10, one possibility would be to head north on 180 at Deming NM, and check out Silver City NM.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_City,_New_Mexico

This would put you at the south end of the Gila NF, with various camping opportunities nearby and to the north. Not sure about your timing to get to Tucson.

https://www.google.com/maps/search/c...26!2d32.770075

Hard to tell what the area is like until you get there, probably. Looks pretty dry with lots of copper and silver mining waste areas (guessing here), and not too many dam sites? Will look for some on the way to Tucson further downstream on the Gila.

Looks like a small dam on the Gila at this pin IMO:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Gr...d4388a88b44193

. . . just north of Safford and south of E. Graham Canal Rd. [Edit -- pin missing but GPS info is in URL I think -- see PS]

Safe Travlin' . . .

PS -- The Coolidge Dam near San Carlos is further downstream, and is a little bigger than the dam referenced earlier.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coolidge_Dam

The San Carlos Apache Tribe allows camping by permit, but no details about RV's are apparent that I can find:

http://www.scatrecreation.org/recrea...ourism/camping
http://www.scatrecreation.org/recrea...nd-regulations

How about some batting practice and camping on a small [dry?] stream in Globe?

Have fun!

Ha, wow Peter I appreciate all the research ya did, I actually did go to Silver City and it was an interesting place. On my way there I spent the night at one of the nicest rest areas I have seen in the middle-of-nowhere called Butterfield Rest Area on New Mexico Hwy 180 north of Deming. I pulled in kinda late and I couldn't believe how nice it was when I woke up, ha!

And then I continued to Silver City, I got there pretty early and it was very empty there but I enjoyed walkin around and lookin in their museum, it seems like it was a very nice town that has had some problems and now is coming back again. I'm glad I went.

And then I headed to the forest down New Mexico 90 towards Lourdsburg and, yep, I camped right on top of the continental divide on Forest Road 4090. It was not too bad of a road for the airstream, though I did need a lil 4wd to stop slippin a bit. But if ya go down the road ya can camp right on the divide.

And then the next morning I headed to Tucson cause it was time to see some family. Next stop, my son in California!

A lil break from the road for the holidays.

But I'll be seeing y'all right here on this forum.

Thanks for the update and fine photos. Have a great time with your family in Tucson and son in California. Plenty of good stopping points along the route if you are you going to take your time getting to the coast.

Safe Travlin' . . .

Pat, Alan's last post on AirForums was on 11/1/17, in his Highway 90 thread.

I very much appreciate all of the kind advice so far. I am the kinda guy that stays in a place as long as it feels right and then I move along. If I miss somethin, that's ok, or if I go to the 2nd best place instead of the first best place, I'm ok with that too. I just enjoy explorin, and the advice from the fine folks on this forum has always been helpuful and inspriing.

Thank you.
