Gros Ventre campground Grand Tetons

I have reservations in Loop D at Gros Ventre, and was wondering if anyone had some insight into the availability of water onsite.
I understand there is potable water near the park entrance, but have read in a couple reviews that the restrooms have a water spigot outside the front door. That would put fresh water within walking distance in each loop.
Is this correct? And is that water potable, or just for washing?
I have reservations for a site directly across from the bathrooms, and I could theoretically string a couple hoses together, fill my fresh water tank, and unhook. Much better than hauling 5 gallon cans of water.

Don't recall that spigots at bathrooms are threaded. Dump station has fresh water fill.

Have you called and asked the park about this, drmox, they might have the most up-to-date information? The Covid situation has changed lots of things IMO.

This info is not fresh and updated for 2021. But at least it is information instead of being a snarky comment.


There is of course the RV fresh water fill near the dump station. You can wait a long time there. There are faucets near the bathrooms. The did not have threads on them. You might try to find some sort of slip on fitting with a hose connection. You need to be mindful of others wanting to use the water. I do not remember any other faucets scattered through the campground like some COE campgrounds have. We filled at the dump station quite a few times. Our freshwater tank lasted in between dump trips.

What you need is a “water thief” — it is a rubber funnel looking device you thread on the female end of your hose. You then hold it on the thread less water spigot and fill your tank.

You'd need a VERY long hose at Gros Ventre. And I'm pretty sure it's not allowed.

I've always found that by the time I need water, I need to dump. So I dump nf refill at the dump station. I do fill a Brita pitcher and a gallon jug for flushing at the rest rooms.

Yeah, I did read one report that the spigots in question were purposefully not threaded to keep people from doing exactly what I was hoping to do. It wouldn't be my intent to stay connected any longer than it took to fill my tank.
I have a 28 gallon rolling dump tank, so I don't plan to pull up stakes and join the traffic jam at the dump/fill site until it's time to check out.
So the only question that remains: is the water at the bathroom spigot potable? Because, I'm directly across from it. Making 4 or 5 trips with my 6 gallon plastic water jug will still be better than dragging the Airstream out to the entrance and back. Note to self: bring a funnel.

You are in a National Park Service (NPS) campground that is operated by a concessioner, who must meet both Wyoming and federal NPS standards. I am sure it is "potable." It is likely tested somewhere in the campground once a day, certainly more often than I or most people test my water at home. What you can't know, without checking current status, is if the water is turned on, if the restrooms are open, etc. The NPS at several parks in Wyoming and Montana, Glacier and Yellowstone included, had a mixed bag of what was open and available, including restrooms - "...due to the Coronavirus..."

Your "sure" about "potable water" may be misplaced IMO. Suggest bringing in bottled water for drinking, coffee etc..

Yeah, I've witnessed a few water stations that did not have water suitable for drinking. Sometimes they're labeled, and sometimes not. Fish cleaning stations in the Northwoods, foot washing stations next to a beach usually will be specified as "non-potable".
I have an in-line water filter attachment for a hose, but there needs to be a threaded fitting for that...
Ironically, I'm the same distance to the Gros Ventre river, and that water might taste better anyway [emoji12].

I have spent probably 7 or 8 weeks at Gros Ventre in the last few years. Two weeks at the time several times. I carry a long hose. I was never strongly tempted to try to fill from the restroom faucet. I thought about it and decided just no. I often do that on COE sites or county parks. There are no water or electric hookups or sewer on the sites that do not have water. Nothing hooked up on the trailer. So all we had to do was to put the awning down and drop the hitch on the ball and go fill and dump so that is what we did. Sometimes the wife and dog just ride along in the trailer. It takes maybe an hour from start to finish if you watch and pick your time. Wrestling a Blue Boy is just not for me. You are probably going to be a long ways from that dump station and will still have to wait your turn to use it.

Yes there are potable water spigots at the rest rooms at Gros Ventre Campground.

The water is potable and all rest rooms have it. I have filled auxiliary container there. There is also water at front gate adjacent to dump station where you can fill up as well. It's our favorite WY campground and we will be there in August. Enjoy!

Hi, we stayed 7 days and after 4 decided it would be good to dump and fill rather than stretching it out for 7. We checked the situation for a couple of days and went after checkout time. No lines. Granted there was a bit of a wait when we were leaving, but it was check out time.

For those looking at a hose with a faucet with no threads, it’s called a water bandit.

It is a lot easier than using a funnel to fill portable water jugs. At least the funnels I have, that are a pain with more drips, dribbles and splashes on the floor than in the jug.

So this dude right here is my huckleberry.
Should take all of 10 min. to connect my 100ft. hose to my 75 footer, screw in my in-line filter, cruise across the road, hold it in place and turn on the water. Wife gives me the [emoji106] symbol that we're full. And there you go: Bob's your uncle.

I have stayed at the Gros Ventre Camping area 3 times over the last several years. I have asked the Rangers and they say the water in the bathrooms and at the water spigot outside the bathrooms is potable. We have drunk the water on all 3 occasions with no ill effects, however it is among the worst tasting water around. It is very metallic tasting. If you plan on drinking the water, filter it through the best filter you can get. At least one with a solid activated carbon core rather than granular carbon. You would be better served by planning on drinking bottled water and use the campground water simply for washing and washing dishes.

If you forget the funnel, enjoy a 16 oz. soda , save the plastic empty and cut out the bottom, whats left is a nifty funnel. Also make couple of trips 3-4 gallon vs. 6 gallons.
