Gros Ventre Campground

We are planning a trip to Gros Ventre Campground (Wyoming) in July or August 2024.

What are your three most favorite campsites to reserve there??

Thanks, Dave

Overall my favorite campground of almost anywhere. I do not have a favored number site. Never had a hookup site there. Camped in the "generator" loop each time. Not fussy about the "site" because we spend so little time at it. None of the sites struck me a "special". Would prefer a site nearest the river. A lovely area to spend a few weeks.

We were there in 2022 and had site 11. It was on the main drag, but not that busy. However, I did like that it was open for Starlink, many of the others are obstructed. Our dearly departed 16' Bambi fit, the pad was short, so that's of course a consideration. I did do a lot of walking with the dog around and I'd have to agree I didn't see any bad sites or recall any extremely desirable ones. I sometimes find Campground Photos website useful (except for all the popups). Many times there's recommendations there.

I'm not sure about how quickly it fills up but as you are probably aware there is the 6-month window for reservations. I know with many of the National Parks you have to set the alarm and be ready with your picks when most any summer dates become available.

We did an overnight stop there this summer, no hookups but a level paved site. We booked there on our way from Gardiner to Rock Springs and hoped to see a Moose by the river. We were not disapointed...

We've stayed at Gros Ventre twice. Our favorite site was in loop A, campsite 68. There's a Long, Long Honeymoon video from a couple of years ago where they stayed in a nearby site in Loop A if you want to get a feel for the location. This part of the campground has ample sun for solar and is off the beaten path at the north end of the campground with no sites behind it, good views and easy access to the trail to the river. Generators are allowed in Loops A, B and C but we had so much sun one was never required.

We stay there about a year ago. We were in the full hook-up loop. It was a short walk down to the lake. One of the things I remember was we had pollen over everything once we departed. Otherwise, it was great for riding our electric bikes. The marina was shut down at that time. I don't know if it has been re-opened yet or not.

We were in Gros Ventre back in June, in loop A: open, not back in the trees.

One thing to note: they had limited dump capacity: as we checked in, you had to schedule your use of the dump tanks, there was a limit to how many could dump each day. And yes, they actually lock the dump tanks overnight. On our departure morning, we were packed up and first in line, waiting for the staff to open up the dump line.

You must be referring to another camp since GV is on the Gros Ventre river. No boats, no marina.

I suspect they're referring to Colter Bay....

NOT a fan

tried to get in June 2022, never could get a site. rode my bike down to check it out, Cottonwood pollen EVERYWHERE, of course Cottonwood trees, not a great looking campground for this reason, wouldn't stay.
I stay in Jackson at the Virginian every time I go.

We stayed at the Rambling Moose campground just outside of that stunning former mining town of Virginia City. Delightful historical area with good restaurants and near Yellowstone and other wonderful sites. Enjoy!

I wouldn't say it's the best campground we've stayed in by far or even the best in the Tetons, but it's well-run, sites have plenty of space, and not too far from Jackson, with decent views of the mountains. We didn't see any wildlife, but it's supposed to be there. Also, it's big, so there are usually some cancellations; that's how we got in - just have to be vigilant. I don't mind cottonwood, sort of like snow.

No worries!

I’d like to stay at Colter Bay sometime. We drove past it on the way to Yellowstone, just didn’t spend a lot of time there (yet).

I enjoyed that Gros Ventre was so close to Jackson, we enjoyed doing the tourist-thing around the square, etc.

We stayed at both Colter Bay and Gros Ventre on our trip.

Going back, I would probably just stay as Gros Ventre. It was an excellent jumping off point.
