Mid October is not that crowded but once you know your ETA it might be best to reserve ahead. Also check Trailer Village if you want hookups.

Hi from AZ. . .you might also consider the North Rim, if you arrive in area before it closes for Winter, usually Oct 15. Good no hook up campground. Much quieter than South rim, great Lodge restaurant, same canyon, with multiple overlooks you can drive to, we prefer it. . . .travel safe, Craig

There are one or two commercial campgrounds in Jacob Lake. A really nice federal campsite just north of the entrance and a campground in the park a stone throw from the rim. This campsite does not have much privacy. Also some boon docking right on the rim near Jacob Lake. North Rim is higher than the south rim so it is colder. We went this April and had a trace of snow.

There is also a large commercial campground in Tuscayan not too far from Grand Canyon Village.

I ended up spending a week there staying in trailer village this past November, walk in was super easy although I ended up calling when u was an hour away and reserved a space for one night. Since they weren't busy, I kept extending and had no problems, the staff there were all super cool. Everyone I spoke to said Mather was just as easy, I wanted hookups for the price difference of a few bucks.
If I had made it earlier I definitely would've checked out the north rim but everything was closed and I was concerned about boondocking as we got some cold weather dropping to 10 at night and barely getting above freezing during the day, the north rim was way way colder.

Have a good trip!

Thanks to all. Timing will not be a sure thing so I was needing to know how good of a plan B we would be needing. I would rather be on the north rim but it may too late this year for that. Thanks again for all the info. Good camping to all Rand

North Rim stops taking reservations after 10/15 but CG is open for first come. However, I have been there in Oct, when it was 90° and when it was 32° with freezing sleet. You can make the call as your heading south.
