Getting to Assateague

Greetings! We have reservations for Assateague Island National Seashore at the end of March. Looking at the RV Trip Wizard directions, it's taking us across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (not the CBBT but the bridge between Annapolis and Stevensville).

Anybody have any thoughts on that route? Concerns? We did the Mackinac Bridge last summer with no issues (full disclosure - I was the one in the passenger seat).

We figure if there are really high winds we can punt and just find someplace to stay near DC instead, but I'd really like to see the ponies if we can!

You can always drop down off I-95 using Hiway 1 on land from Christiana, Delaware and then drive down the peninsula. After about 40 miles you'll follow the Coast all the way down. It's a very nice drive but you will have lights the whole way while driving down the coast. In Christiana, you'll pass right by a Costco which will be your last one on that route. If you do go across the Bay Bridge, avoid at all costs on Friday or Sunday. Btw, its actually 2 bridges, one with 3 lanes and one with 2 lanes, the 2 lane span usually heads east, the 3 lane span heads west, but they will change the direction on the one lane during high demand (Fridays and Sundays.......lol). The bay Bridge is also Toll, but it's toll on the fly, if you don't have an Easy Pass or affiliated transponder, they will bill you by mail.

I'm not a fan of towing over long bridges with lots of traffic.

i would take the other route.

We visit that area for two weeks every September, although last year was our first time in our new to us Airstream.

Crab cakes and all the rest of the food is excellent at The Shrimp Boat...

The original bridge which is all east bound is a little narrow but definitely nothing to worry about. You basically need to stay in the right lane and fall in line. The west bound span sometimes is both directions which I would not take the redirect lane east. I also don’t like the left lane going west if the bridge is in 2 way mode.

Go over and check out Berlin which is a few miles to the west. We had a good meal at the Sterling Tavern and a good ice cream cone at The Island Creamery

Also if you are staying in the ocean side loop 2 the horse will come and see you. You need to be careful not to leave out any food.

No worries. Just stay in your lane. No tolls.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for the info and suggestions! You guys are the best!

I think we'll be ok going over the bridge as planned, but now I have a backup plan and a few good restaurants to try! Thank you!

Last summer, we took the northern bridge over onto Delmarva, then headed south via the tunnels as we left. No problems, really.

Both are tolled: they removed all the toll booths on the bridge at Annapolis; we rarely deal w/ tolls so don't have an EZpass, so they mailed us the toll bill. For the tunnels, they do have booths; just make sure you have your propane turned off.
