From dreamer to owner

For as long as I can remember I was fascinated by the beauty of the Airstream and the promises of freedom it stood for. Last year I decided that my dream of owning an Airstream would become a reality. I found this forum and gathered a wealth of information and after a while I even joined in the conversation and asked a few questions . Armed with all this knowledge I set out to realize this dream. The first step was to attend a seminar at Can Am where I gained even more knowledge and even got to tow three different Airstream with three different tow vehicules. This gave me the confidence that this was something I could do,and that was not obvious for someone who never towed anything in his life. The second step was a visit to Jackson center to tour the AS plant and that gave me the confidence that an AS was the right trailer for me. The last step was taken last week when I actually bought my AS. I will take delivery of it in May and my first trip might well be at Alumapalooza. I figured that there is no better place to do a shakedown cruise , if anything goes wrong there should be plenty of people to help me out. I hope to see as many of you as possible and if you look for me chances are I will the guy who takes an hour to back up properly

Welcome to the Airstream and Aerforums community. We all were new to driving and backing up at one time, so we understand the initial challenges the new owner faces. With practice these challenges become the norm, but moving slow in reverse mode is always wise.

Welcome aboard! Just keep up with the 'maintenance'... Motorcycles, Airplanes, Cars, Airstreams do NOT wear out 'overnight'... soon as you notice a concern, deal with it properly and your AS will last a looooong time...

Welcome PapaSmurf. By doing your pre purchase prep it sounds like you are on your way to to enjoying your Airstream to its fullest. My copilot in life and I picked up our new AS in April and took a few short shake out trips before hitting the road on June 11 and returning home on Aug 11 after logging 7500 miles, visiting 9 National Parks, Napa Valley Ca and driving up the west coast before returning to Wisconsin. The shake out trips were instrumental in getting to know our Airstream and it was just plain fun too. Enjoy your AS and hope to see you on the road. Joining your local AS WBCCI chapter is a good way of meeting other Streamer too.

Welcome to trailer life! I bet more dents are put into trailers when backing up than at any other time. Never hesitate to get out of the TV and look for yourself at how close you are to obstacles. You can't always rely on other peoples opinion when they are supposed to be watching for you. Walkie talkies can save a lot of time and shouting! Leland

Thanks everyone for your kind words. And yes Mrjkq I did my homework, I strongly believe in " measure twice, cut once " . My wife on the other hand is more mesure 5 times and never cut. So I had a little convincing to do but now she is on board and even more excited then me.

Welcome to our group. You will enjoy Alumapaloza, we went too. Be sure to keep up your learning. Be sure to read the info you get with your trailer. Also the book "long Honey Moon". Amazon has a lot of books by people that bought Airstreams, a lot of them are real good. The Magazine Airstream Life is very good, Trailer Life not so good. Good Luck and have fun. We are 5 years into the life and love it.

Congratulations!

We took the plunge with a used 2006 25' Safari a few years ago. We loved it so much we upgraded this fall to a 28' International. We've been places and seen things we never would have seen without our Airstream. When our lab sees us getting the trailer ready he gets excited because he knows it's road trip time!

You're going to have a blast traveling and seeing our great country! I'm taking early retirement Sep 2016 so we can hit the road even more!

A belated Congratulations to you, Papa Smurf, on your process and jump into a new adventure! I wish you a speedy waiting period and hope you get a chance to visit out west in America. The second best thing to owning an Airstream is meeting other similar travelers.

Thank you westcoastas. The wait will be long and painful, it is -14C in Montreal now with no sign of spring.I spent a few days visiting San Diego and San Francisco before and I have great memories of driving on highway 1. My wife and I can't wait to be back with the AS this time. I really enjoyed the time I spent in California and I feel that California is to the US what Quebec is to Canada, that might be the reason I liked it so much.
