Frederick MD to Denver

We are planning a trip from Frederick MD to Denver in the next month or so. We would like to take I-70 all or most of the way and are planning to take several days. I would welcome any suggestions on places to check out along the way or campground recommendations. Thanks!

I 70 is good for making time. Might be difficult for seeing things and to make Denver in a few days.

But, here goes- Wheeling WV has a great toy and train museum, Krueger St Toy and Train Museum. In Dayton is the Museum of the US Air Force. Richmond, IN, offers a great Model T Museum, in Knightstown, IN, stands the gymnasium which played the Hickory Huskers home court in the movie Hoosiers. Indianapolis, you could spend a month there, but the NCAA Hall of Champions, the Eli Lilly Civil War Museum, the USS Indianapolis Memorial, to name a few. Terre Haute hosts a Holocaust museum, Candles, founded by an Auschwitz survivor, and the Clabber Girl museum, run by the company that produces the baking powder. In Casey, IL is the worlds largest of almost everything, Effingham has a huge Cross at the Crossroads, Vandalia, IL has the state Capitol where Lincoln served as an Illinois state representative, the Arch in St Louis, the St Louis Zoo, a freebie.
Independence, MO has the Harry S Truman Presidential Museum and Library, Alma, KS, Creamery and Cheese shop,

Your route has KOAs, in Wentzville, MO, the Airstream dealer, Bill Thomas has several sites.

In Columbia MO (right in the center) we recommend Cottonwoods RV Park. I would frankly avoid staying over night in either St Louis or Kansas City, and stay here.

Driving I 70 across KS is a pretty basic Interstate experience. Roads are in good shape, a fair amount of truck traffic, and chance of crosswinds. But a fairly easy drive as it is Wide Open Spaces. We have stayed at the KOA in Salina and it is perfectly fine.

When you hit Limon CO, consider taking CO Hiway 86 to Castle Rock in the south Denver area, and then hitting I 25 there. It's a lovely drive.

We have used the Salina KOA, a good spot for a 1 day drive to Denver. Nov of '20 we stayed a night at Finger Lakes SP, near Columbia MO.Pleasantly surprised but I guess you don't want to be there in the summer, apparently it's a big dirt bike place. We've done this trip twice but always just traveling to see family, not sightseeing. The big cities are kind of crazy, plan to avoid rush hour, but they're all very doable. Make sure your set up is dialed, KS can be windy and lots of trucks.

Maybe check out the new Airstream facility in Jackson Center, Ohio?

Recent thread -- store open: https://www.airforums.com/forums/f42...re-218846.html

Need any repairs, supplies, misc. do-dads, nick-knacks etc.?

Not sure that the Covid rules are.

Have a great trip with your aluminum tent -- not sure about making this trip soon, unless the trailer is fully winterized IMO.
