Fort Leavenworth area?
Hi,
My family and I will be traveling through the Fort Leavenworth, KS area with our '59 Tradewind for about three weeks in mid to late June. Wondering if anyone can offer up a place to boondock or a decent campground in the area?

Boondocking in June sounds hot! (Or maybe you have a generator or something.)
We spent some time in Kansas City in July last year, it's no too far from Levenworth. There's some super fun stuff to do there: 1959 Airstream Overlander, "Someday": Our Midwest Trip, Part 3: Kansas City

There is a forum member silver 67 who is from Leavenworth. You might send a private message and ask what is available.

Parks
There is a small park just under the bridge that goes over the Missouri River. It is right on the bank of the Missouri River. There is also a nice little park just outside Weston,Missouri which is about four miles from Leavenwrth on the Missouri side of the river. Of course there is a Wal-Mart and also some lakes near by.

16.7 miles south of Leavenworth, KS on HWY 7 is an RV park in Bonner Springs. I stayed there about 10 years ago and it wasn't a bad place. Not a "fun" place as mostly temporary lodging for people working in the area but it was safe and suitable. They were expanding when I was there so it was messy. I live about 30 miles south of there now in Paola, KS and have a hookup with septic on my property if that would be at all helpful. www.cottonwoodcamping.com

Here are a couple of ideas for you. Weston State park is a beautiful place with electric and a dump station. Also in Atchison KS there is a city park with camping electric no dump but $15.00 a night and there is a dump station near town.

I've stayed at both and Weston would be the best of the two. Bonner Springs CG is pretty bad IMO and the Leavenworth CG is by the river but also the train tracts.
Need any more help let me know.

Weston
I agree with bl the Weston Park is the best bet. If you like antiques visit the town of Weaton. If you like military history go to the Fort Leavenworth Museum. Although grards may give your car a guick once over on the way into the fort.

We used to live north of Weston, and when they opened Weston Park we tried to get them to let us put horse trails in, but they did not like that idea. Yeah, Weston is a neat town and a lot more character then Tonganoxie.
The museum at the Fort is worth the trip too.

I'm a retired Army guy and spent a year at Fort Leavenworth (Command and General Staff College --- NOT the prison!). The town is very congenial, and the scenery gorgeous....though if you go a few miles west there is NOTHING but prairie....great museum on the mliitary installation, and if you go down to the river you can still see where all the Conestoga wagons crossed the Missouri enroute to the west...yup, the ruts are that deep. June is not all that hot, but forget August....and this part of Kansas is "Toto and Dorothy" country come tornado season..

Leavenworth area
All,
Thank you for the tips on traveling through the Leavenworth area. You've given us some great advice to make our 3 weeks in the area nice.
Any tips on things for kids to do in the area?
Steve
