Finger Lakes, NY for wine tasting and Camping
We have never visited the Finger Lakes area and are planning a trip in June. Can anyone recommend some places to camp, RV or State Park? We want to explore and of course, try the delicious wines. Thanks in advance for your help.

Get THE App
Get the Alstays Mobile App for your phone and explore the possibilities. This is the first thing I look at when planning a trip. You will be amazed at the RV Sites available in the Finger Lakes Area.

However, I liked the remoteness of the Adirondacks even more. Upstate N.Y. is a different world than thee Depart of the state.

+1 for Watkins Glen - we have made a trip up there every fall for the past ten years or so. Plan to spend a few days hitting all the wineries on both sides of Seneca lake.

Finger Lakes
I live in the Finger Lakes. I recommend the Allstays app. It is really great. I got it after seeing the reviews here.
The Watkins Glen KOA is nice. We camped there with our grandkids and they loved it. The premium sites have a patio with sunken fire pits.
There are a lot of wineries on Seneca and Keuka lake.
There is also a brewery that is great. It’s on the west side of Seneca Lake about 15 minutes north of Watkins in Rt 14. It’s called Climbing Bines.
There r many wineries on the west side of Seneca.
Enjoy.

Keuka Lake State park is beautiful and has large wooded sites. Also Hammondsport Fire Department has water and electric sites with dump station for $20 a night and is near the Village beach.

Watkins Glen is a great central spot to use as a base to not only visit the Glen, but also nearby places such as Ithaca, Hammondsport, Corning, etc.
We have stayed at the Glen State Park, but not always easy to get a spot especially with a larger trailer. KOA is fine too but a ways out of town.
There is a county park right down town where you can walk to everything. Full hookups, very level sites with easy access, and a beach just across the road. Nor as attractive as the State Park, but we are away most of the time anyway so it has worked out well for us. Nice to be able to walk into town for shopping, restaurants etc.

Much depends on how you like to camp. If you like KOA then either Watkins Glen or Canandaigua are good options. The Watkins Glen KOA is very busy and family oriented. You need to watch out for events at the race track when trying to stay at Watkins Glen KOA.
We live in Rochester and often stay in the Finger Lakes area. Sampson State Park is a favorite with just about everyone. It has an interesting history as a military training base during WWII and has a museum and fun places to poke around in. Across the highway is the old depot which has recently been privately purchased and just started giving tours. On the grounds of the old depot is a herd of white deer (not albinos) that is quite unique.
As for state parks we also like Cayuga State Park which is just outside Seneca Falls (home of the women's movement). Also claims fame to be the original Bedford Falls in the movie It's a Wonderful Life. Keuka SP is nice.
There are many SP options around Ithaca. A really great town with lots to do, eat, and drink!! There also Pine Creek Campground nearby which is private. We had a WBCCI Region Rally there in May 2017. We definitely would return here as well. http://www.pinecreekcampground.com/
We haven't stayed here yet but if you can also check out Gannett Hill Park. This is a county park on top of the hill. Inexpensive. I can't talk to how busy it is or amenities. http://www.co.ontario.ny.us/Faciliti...lity/Details/4
And if you really want out of the way check the National Forest Campground at Blueberry Patch. We've driven through and I think it has more than 9 sites. At 31 feet it would be a squeeze for us but you should fit. This would be boondocking. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE...rdb5318999.pdf
You've picked a great, low-key place to explore. We love having the Finger Lakes as our backyard playground.

Depending on where you are coming from or leaving after, Letchworth State Park is worth a visit. It is just west of the finger lakes district. Deep canyon on the Genesee river with 3 beautiful waterfalls.

We have stayed at Pinecreek Campground in Newfield several times. Very nice, centrally located, close to Ithaca and Watkins Glen. Plenty of wineries, distilleries, breweries, festivals etc along with Robert Treman SP, Buttermilk Falls and others for hiking. Check it out.

Join Harvest Hosts. There are several wineries in the Finger Lakes region that participate.
