Fall leaves 2020 - seeking recommendations

We are currently quarantined in Southern Ontario planning to head back to the States the second or third week of October. Being natives to the West Coast we have only really experienced East Coast fall leaves once about 35 years ago so for our first extended AS outing we hope to try to catch some color (OK "colour" since we are in Canada, Eh!).

QUESTION FOR THOSE FAMILIAR WITH THE EAST COAST: If you were to enter NY from Ontario the second or third week of October (in Covid 2020) which way would you head and where would you plan to stay (we are very happing boondocking, staying at HarvestHosts sites, NF sites, etc)?

Thanks!

ncgregory, you’re in a unique situation! We’re stuck in the lower 48 and would love to get to Canada :-)

I recently found this interactive Fall Color Map - just drag the slider on the date line to change. Here’s a screen shot from the 2nd week in October. Can’t help with places to stay.

Good luck and welcome home!
-Jeff

You’re coming down to NC? In a normal year, you’ll be riding the tail end of the “peak” - color and campground occupancy. Reservations highly recommended. Stay closer to the Appalachians for the most spectacular views. There’s an Airstream park in VA, but they may have Covid limitations.

Ncgregory,
Sorry, it’s been twenty years since we traveled that part of the country.
For those using the phone app, Jeffmc306’s foliage tracker is found on smokymountains.com (to get the interactive version)
A CNN article this morning suggests the leaf season will be early and short this year because of drought conditions.
Happy travels.
