A campground on the way to your main destination?
Just a guess...

Where did you come across this term "en route campground"?
Taken in its context, maybe we can figure out what it means.

More info
Text from a website using the term:
"The North Fore Bay also has an en-route campground. This campground is designed for one night stays for self contained vehicles only.:

Seems to me that that clearly defines what an en-route campground is: Only for one night stays - no longer - as this campground is designed only for those who are on their way to some other destination. This campground merely serves as a stop over rather than an actual destination (which probably means it has minimal amenities - they specify "self-contained" rvs, meaning there are probably zero hook-ups and maybe primitive spots).

And even if it does have a spigot for filling your tank, it might be nasty-tasting well water.

Our local Wal-Mart had 2 class A's and one fiver in the parkinglot last night. Ironically, it is listed as the only Wal-Mart in Ohio that DOES NOT allow overnight RV parking. I wonder if those poor souls got booted out last night?

EnRoute
Thanks to all for your thoughts.
I came across this several times - last time at Huntington State Beach. They have water and some hook-ups, though. Reserveamerica lists it as such, too.

"En Route" when used by Reserveamerica or at Forest Service, BLM or National Park sites means, generally, a few sites or an area which is set aside for one night or transient use (pull in, spend the night then leave), are not reservable (first come, first serve) and may or may not have hookups. A campground we use in the local (San Bernardino) mountains, holds 3-5 "en route" sites off the reservable list for this purpose.

We enjoyed Anderson's RV Park in Long Beach, Wa. Campground is a short walk to the beach. A great place level parking newly remodeled.
