E Bikes X2 Bikes On Top Of Truck Bed

We used 4 Yakima bars to carry the load.
These Yakima racks are rated at 45 pounds each.
Our bikes weigh 50 pounds + with batteries and are real blast to ride around!

Wow....that seems like a lot of weight to heft to the top of your bed. Twice the weight of my mountain bikes.

What cover are you using, and how watertight is it?

Your right! Takes two people.
In real life we take the batteries out. They are 5-10 lbs each.

Exposed Bikes.

Thieves grab these from those set ups in seconds.
Multiple Locks and at least 1 Alarm.
I'd put these expensive bikes in the Airstream if I was driving into town or sightseeing.

Thanks for posting. I just put the same carriers on my Diamondback tonneau cover with the same tracks for 2 Cube e-bikes. Haven’t used it yet. How important do you feel the 4 bars are now that you have used the set up? Did you try with two first? I hadn’t considered 4. The DB cover is solid aluminum that one can stand on. Do you think the cover would influence you choice on the number of bars?

Here is the cover. It is waterproof. But it does freeze shut. Where I live its not a problem.

I used 4 bars because with 2 the bikes would move around a lot especially off road. We also tow a bike trailer that goes up on the bars too.

I have used the 4 bar set up with the batteries in the bikes and it works good. I had to put some rubber spacers between the extra bars and the new Yakima rack because there was a gap.

The cover is independent of the number of bars.

For long journeys we will take the batteries out.

I weighed the bikes today. Batteries are 6 lbs and the bikes 44. total is 50 lbs.

Are the racks attached to the extra bars or do you have them just resting on the spacers.
When you say the bikes moved around off road are you saying that you did try with just 2 bars and it was only the rougher terrain that caused you to decide to beef up?
Thanks for the help. I have my own experimentation to do but it is very helpful to learn from your experience with the exact same set up!

First two bars with normal bikes. They moved around while off road.
Then four bars with heavy bikes. I have not been off road but the four bar setup passed the "speed-bump" test.

The racks rest on the extra bars with the famous split rubber hose spacer technique. Look at the pictures.

The E bikes are more work but way more fun. Go tubeless!

Great idea to double up on the cross bars. Gives me another option as wife’s bike is same as what you have mine is currently a regular mountain bike but I see an ebike coming.
