Do you use a dash cam?

I’ve been toying with the idea of installing a dash/windshield cam in my tow vehicle. I haven’t ever been in a situation where I wished that I had one, but it might give me a little peace of mind. I’ve seen plenty of videos online from dash cams and the stupidity of many drivers is amazing. Despite driving a large rig, I sometimes feel like I’m invisible when I’m towing my Airstream. Other drivers cut in front of me, oblivious to the fact that I can’t stop my rig as fast as they can stop their small car.

For those of you with dash cams, which one do you use? What do you like or dislike about it? I’ve been looking at smaller units that hide easily on the top of the windshield. Garmin makes a small unit that interests me.

I am on my second Garmin in the last 8 or so years. I have used the footage in several instances over the years. I would not be without one.

I’m considering the Garmin Mini 2. I really don’t want another screen on my windshield. I would rather access the images and videos on my phone or the web. Which model do you use?

I like the Viofo A129 Plus in my vehicles. I like it a lot and it was relatively cheap. Seemed to get better reviews than the Garmins, but who knows unless you've owned both? This camera records both front and rear facing directions in the car. I'd love something like that which would record the rear view from my trailer too.

I also have the viofo, although I'm still trying to figure out how to us it!

Yes, both in her car and my truck. I bought a couple Roav's, model C1 Pro, in 2019, they are still going strong.

Couple years ago my wife's Honda was totalled by a red-light runner. He lied to insurance so we went to small claims and won. I would not be on the road without a dashcam.

The cheapest Walmart units work great and pretty much all units allow you to turn the screen off. On the truck I tied into the ignition-on 12V in the overhead light console, so it is auto on/off and I don't have to think about it until I need to.

The ones with interior mics are also great for settling he said/she said disputes with the spouse.

In all our vehicles. Have used the record to document a road rage/carless driver incident to assist law enforcement.

Insurance companies should offer a discount for drivers agreeing to install.

I have one. Didn't install it yet on new pickup. Wish I'd had it. Situation where an idiot nearly caused a major crash. If I had it on I would have called it in to the sheriff.

I have a BlackVue I used in a previous car. I have yet to install it into my TV but will soon. I have a video of this guy cruising in his wheelchair down the middle of the street. Not sure how fast he was going but he was moving.

I have the Garmin 67W and enjoy it very much. Tucks up out of the way and is small.

I'm intrigued by dashcams and am interested in getting one. General question...do all require a power cable, or are some battery operated? If a cable is required, how difficult is it to wire into truck? Thanks.

Towing, my HaloView has an integrated dash cam.

Not towing, I have a dash cam.

Our daughter was a witness to a fatal wreck. She was front row opposite direction as the driver in error was ejected from his vehicle through the passenger window. The trooper asked if she would be a witness to the accident. My daughter, “I can do better than that. It’s recorded on my dash cam.”

I have been using Z Edge cameras for about 5 years now and like them. This is what I have in my tow vehicle right now, but I haven't gotten around to installing the rear camera yet.

Strongly recommend everyone have a dash cam. A few years ago we were involved in a fatal crash when an oncoming driver fell asleep and hit us head on while driving our first coach. The dash camera really saved my back side and shortened the investigation to a long day instead of months. Trooper said that if they hadn't been able to see the other driver crossing the center line on the video they would have assumed I was at fault.

I have had this one for year and it has been flawless. I several cheap ones that didn't have screens and you had to use your phone. The other two I had would stop record for no reason.

I really like the screen and shows what is being record and red dot on the screen that confirms that it is recording. Plus 4K is a plus and I use a 64GB card.

YES! We were driving in Arkansas, luckily we did not have the trailer. Someone came into my lane and destroyed my driver's mirror. They later claimed they did not come in the lane and we BOTH were simply too close to the center lane and clipped. After seeing the video, both insurance companies saw the truth!

Same here!

We got ours after a near head-on collision with a car passing a tractor trailer on a two lane road. We had to ride the shoulder to avoid the car. Now all our cars have Thinkware cameras.

Just be careful of leaving the camera in the heat (while not in use). They are susceptible to heat damage if left in the summer sun.

Someone asked how they were powered: The Thinkware can be hardwired to the dash (which we did in our truck) but our car utilizes the cigarette lighter power adaptor and Thinkware gives you tool to tuck the cable across the headliner, around the windshield and to the outlet.
