DC to UP (Copper Harbor) by way of Marquette and want to avoid PA Turnpike?

Hi Folks,
Looking for help with my route, DC area to UP (Copper Harbor) by way of Marquette and want to avoid PA Turnpike.
I have searched the forums and got a lot of good insight. The hills on the PA Tpke do not bother me, the Jersey barriers and trucks do, so decided I want to go around. Pulling a 25 International with a very capable truck.
My route:
270 out of DC
68 west across MD to Morgantown WV
79 N from Morgantown thru SW corner of PA to 70W
70W to 77N up to 80W in Ohio
80W to 23N near Ann Arbor to 75N to the Mackinaw bridge
Route 2 along Lake Michigan to 77N to 28 to Marquette
Thanks in advance

We do not have any turnpikes in Michigan but we do have lots of construction. Michigan Department of Transportation web site should give you some ideas on construction. I can tell you US 23 north of Ann Arbor is under construction.

The route looks good to me. Try to head out on 270 at an off-peak time.

Also Ive driven that stretch of the PA turnpike and dont remember it being notably bad/difficult. But I was not towing.

Somewhat off topic, but does Copper Harbor have a decent campground in the vicinity as your final destination?

Are you going to do the pasty trail in the UP?

Rolind - not sure what the pasty trail is but I'll check it out. Copper and Marquette have excellent mountain biking, looking forward to it.

I'd be inclined to take 70 over to Columbus and run up 23 picking up 75 in Findlay Ohio.

It’s like the bourbon trail except for pasties.
https://thepastyguy.com/portfolio/th...pasties-in-up/. I’ll have to check out the mountain biking in the up. We are headed to pictured rocks later this summer.

That part of the UP is an interesting place to spend some time. I have never driven across PA any way but on the turnpike.

That drive thru the UP is beautiful. We've been to the Houghton peninsula several times. Great agate rock hunting all along that shore of Superior. The Quincy mine tour will blow your mind. You will see the Keweenaw snow gauge that tracks annual snowfall. Tops out at 390". We're envious.

We stayed at Fanny Hoe Resort last summer and they even provided a dog-sitter while we spent 2 nights on Isle Royale. We love that little town.

While you are up on the UP don't miss the The Jam Pot on Highway 26. Run by Brothers of a religious order. They sell some goood stuff. You can get a preview on their website.

An alternate once you cross the bridge is to take M-123 to M-28 or cross M-28 and return to it. That cuts out the scenic drive along Lake Michigan but is faster and allows another scenic route to Lake Superior on the eastern end of the U.P.

Just as a thought. Assuming you have the appropriate documents, have you thought of going thru Canada? Cross in Buffalo, take 401 to 402 and then back into the US at Port Huron/Sarnia...
Once in the UP, stop in L'Anse at the Hilltop Restaurant and get some of their cinnamon roles. The things weigh about a pound. On a trip last year, we spent a nice night at Baraga State park which is just outside of L'Anse. If you go to White Fish Point, Brown's Fisheries in Paradise is a great place to stop for a meal - fabulous white fish...
