Cleaning Water Filter on Water Pump - question

When I remove the plastic cap on the water pump to access the filter for cleaning - will water spill out of the pump? (Assume the pump is turned off).
Thanks.

Yes, at least it does on mine.

I just put a thick towel down underneath to catch it, clean the filter quickly and get it all reassembled.

Plus . . . in most models the owner's manual recommends . . . when winterizing the plumbing . . . that you disconnect the discharge hose from the pump, and run the pump briefly. A good-sized towel on the floor can catch all this water in one fell swoop! [hot link in blue]
