Christmas on the road!
Well, we *almost* have a plan!
School vacation starts the weekend before Christmas and we have reservations for Canopener starting Thursday the third. More importantly we have our children's permission to have Christmas away from home for the first time in ten years. My daughter is very excited and has already drawn up plans on how to decorate our airstream and wants to make a map for Santa to find us. The question is: where should we be Christmas morning? We start in N Louisiana and I'm thinking about maybe atlantic coast New Year's Day. Having not spent much time wandering around the southeast states, what are some suggestions or "you gotta see ...." we should consider?

Wow, Matt! Sounds like an adventure in the making!
Anything from St. Augustine to Charleston would be beautiful, in my opinion. St. Mary's, Georgia, Cumberland island, Edisto Beach---all lovely and worth some thought.
The farther north you get, could run into some weather cold enough to not want to be outside, or seriously inclement weather, so that is something to consider. Stephanie is definitely going to want an onboard potty,
It will be a memorable trip for you and your family, and fun to watch this plan take shape. I'll jump back in as I feel I have something to offer.
Maggie

We are headed to canopener also, if you get near the georgia coast we will be headed the same direction to topsail!
Lots of great spots over here. Jekyll island has a decent campground, across the street from the beach. Crooked river is in st. Mary's ga, skidaway island state park in savannah.
Make reservations soon, the snowbirds are coming

What? Functioning bathrooms and indoor plumbing? I thought we were camping, not pulling around the hotel Ritz! Just kidding....that's something that's high on the list along with maybe a new Dometic fridge, can I get Santa to deliver early?
Jekyll Island is something that is on our list to visit. My wife's grandparents lived there and she grew up visiting them. I've heard great things about the island. As a matter of fact, that's where we told our kids we were going last spring when we snuck them down to Ft. Wilderness and Disney for a week.
They weren't disappointed.

If you wind up in Charleston for New Years you can do the polar bear swim in the ocean on New Years day!

Or Ft. Wilderness at Disneyworld, can't go wrong there.
See ya at the Canopener!

I would leave now but my kids won't let me. And they are 47, 45, 38, and 30. But after Christmas we make an escape to Canopener. Sal.

Update! Yay!
We left yesterday afternoon! Long story, but things happened before we could leave, so we got a late start.
I'm writing this at the alabama state line rest area at 8:30 in the morning after spending a ($24) night at Nanabe Creek. We have to go get our picture taken at the Alabama State Capitol and then probably over to Atlanta for a day or so. Coke World, Underground Mall, Dr King Memorial, State Capitol. Hopefully we can be somewhere around the coast for the weekend.

While in atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium is right in the same area as the world of coke...worth a trip! Be careful at underground atlanta after dark!

I was thinking about it. I haven't really been to Atlanta in almost twenty years, and then it was for a school trip being shuttled around on a bus. I don't remember anything much about any of it, and I'm sure it's different than when I was here then.

There's not a lot going on in Atlanta, from our perspective.
We were there for the first time several years ago, expected a beautiful old town. Wrong. Atlanta was burned during the War.
We enjoyed the outskirts much more, some antiques and neat little shops.
Have fun!

Maggie,
Savannah would be what you were looking for!
St. Simons Island is also a neat place.

Yep, love Savannah and that entire coastal area.
We recall traffic in Atlanta as being GHASTLY, and not enough to see there to make it worth risking life and limb. Be careful.

This thread has really got me interested in a Spring trip to Savannah area. What campgrounds would you recommend? Thanks!
