Cassiar Highway: Any recent thoughts or tips?

Hello. My wife and I are moving from Oregon back to Alaska and are currently planning the stretch from Prince George to Whitehorse. We took the Alaska Highway southbound when we moved from Alaska to Oregon during a 5-day-first-summer-of-COVID-speed-run in July of 2020 (Whitehorse-Watson Lake-Fort Nelson-Dawson Creek-Prince George).

We're taking our time on the move back north and are considering taking the Cassiar Highway from Prince George to Watson Lake instead of repeating our previous trip. We're currently scheduled to depart Prince George on May 18th.

At first glance, it appears that fuel and services are more limited than the the other route. Does anyone have any recent experience with road conditions, services, and fuel availability (gas)? The RV Life app and Milepost are helpful, but I'm hoping for some first-hand knowledge. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or tips!

We have done that trip four times, and like it better than the AK highway. Gas stations are not an issue. The northern section has better access to Provincial Parks for overnights. Get some cheap carpeting to protect the front of the trailer from gravel. Seems like they are always repairing the roadway.

I drove south on it last August. Road was great and paved as I recall (but I'm not adverse to gravel). I fueled at Meziadin Junction.

Lots of fire damage in the northern section as I recall. I went that way to see Stewart and Hyder - a let down for me - but interesting to be at the top of the Portland Canal. The Bear and Salmon Glacier were fun. Best part was driving all the way up to the Granduc Mine to see the new exploration going on.

Thank you both for the information. We’re heading through next week. I’ll post an update if we find anything different.

No issues on the Cassiar. Paved the whole way, plenty of opportunities for fuel. We took the side trip to Stewart, too. We thought the road coming back (east) from Stewart was bad when we were on it, but in hindsight that was minor league stuff compared to the conditions from Kluane Lake to Tok. The burned area in the northern section was certainly extensive.

Thanks again for the information!

I’ve done the trip twice. Taking the Alaska highway one way and the Cassiar the other. Both times, I saw 10 times as much wildlife on the Cassiar. Some frost heaves, and pot holes, and of course some construction. I really like that road. Have a great trip.
