We drove into Death Valley yesterday. The campgrounds are closed officially today at noon. Restrooms will be locked up. Electronic kiosks are covered to prevent use with the shutdown noticed. This is for Furnace Creek, Sunset and Texas Springs. There is finally an alert on the the NPS Death Valley website. The campgrounds still had some campers, probably leaving today. Mesquite Springs was closed due to flood damage. Visitor centers are closed. The trading post and the dining facilities are open. We drove down to Badwater and through Artist Drive and Dantes Point (Dantes point closes tomorrow until April for some construction. Hopefully part of this project will remove the graffiti off the restroom 1/4 down from the top)

Just driving into the park from Pahrump to the features I've listed was about 220 miles round trip.

There is a lot of BLM land on the north side of Joshua Tree. I don't think you need a permit. You can find directions and maps if you google it.

I think permits are not needed for most BLM land, but could be wrong. Quartzite would be an exception due to it's popularity.

Thanks to all for your contributions. We'll leave the thread open while the Parks are re-opening. The CR is only good until February 8. Folks with travel plans in that time frame, be advised. If need be, another title change may be required or we can start a new thread. Safe Travels!

I think this is correct, and it's a moot point for at least another few weeks, but if a permit were required and there is no one to issue them; there is likely no one to check on whether one has a valid permit or not.

I really don't see another "shutdown" happening then.
I think the parties involved got enough bad press.

Me I am not going to bet the bank on not having another shut down in Feb. Bad press for both parties, fake news or real news? Round one was a no brainer. Round two? Let the party start.

Best regards and safe travels

It's not uncommon anymore for the Federal Government to operate on a series of continuing resolutions for the whole year, without ever once approving a budget. The continuing resolution is a way to keep funding ongoing work without approving new work that was included in the budget, while the proponents and opponents argue out the issue.

The shutdowns normally happen at the end of one fiscal year and the beginning of the next, so a mid-fiscal-year shutdown is unusual. That being the case— and especially since certain legislators are trying to hold the budget (and the next continuing resolution) hostage until and unless their favorite bills are approved— another shutdown seems almost inevitable.

Gone are the days when we sent statesmen to Washington. All that's left are politicians. Sadly, that's partly because so few Americans understand the difference anymore.

And once again we are veering off the intended purpose of this thread. Moderators, feel free to delete.
