Camping near Philadelpha?
Does anyone have any suggestions for a campground/RV park near Philadelphia?
We are planning to take the Tradewind down to Pennsylvania Dutch country for a week in June, but I'd like to stop near the city for a couple of days to show the kids Independence Hall and some other sites--can't seem to find much that's near the Philadelphia in the guides I have.
Thanks so much for everyone's help--we brought the Tradewind home in October, and have been looking forward to taking her on the road ever since--have learned a ton from lurking here!

Hi JenandGC,
I'm very new to AS's and camping (new as in never done this before). I have heard that there is an Airstream only campground in S. Jersey I believe in Cape May County. While it's not really near Philly (about 1.5 hour drive), it may be a nice experience and it is close to the S. Jersey shore towns - a night at the Wildwood boardwalk would be a big hit with the kids. Perhaps someone on the forum has stayed at the campoground and can give you some more details. When in June and how many of you are there? I'll ask around for ideas on "local" campgrounds.

Excellant camp site is Pa state Park "French Creek" - approx $20.00
Around 20-30 miles from Phil.

Bump for more info--we are going to the Philadelphia area in July and are very interested in sites. The area KOA wants $48.50 a night, holy cow!
I will check out French Creek--that sounds nice! Any other suggestions??
Thanks!
Susan

In June of 2005, while fulltiming, we stayed at Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro, NJ, about 12 miles from Philadelphia. Not cheap, by any definition, but a nice campground with nice facilities. The staff was quite friendly at the time, as well. It was very convenient for visiting Philly and relatives in nearby Audubon, NJ.
We found--not surprisingly--that the campgrounds closest to major metropolitan areas tend to be the most expensive. State parks that are friendly to RVers can sometimes offer a good alternative for a lower price.

On our way to Cherry Blossom Rally, we stayed at Timberlane Campground across the river in Clarksboro, N.J. and took the train into Philly. Saw an Airstream in someone's back yard on the way in, too!

Thanks for the info, everyone! I ended up making reservations at French Creek State Park at the "horrific" cost of $16 per weekday night and $19 for Friday/Saturday nights for a 30/50 amp 40' shaded site with facilities.
We're looking forward to it!
