Campgrounds in and around New Orleans

I am headed to New Orleans to visit my son, and am looking for a good campground in New Orleans, and also another in the area (1-2 hrs maybe south? or near the Lake? good water views?) for another night or 2 after we leave there. Thanks for the help!

There is an RV Park near downtown - http://fqrv.com. I haven't stayed there. I have stayed at Bayou Segnette State Park. Nice park, good security and 15 minutes from downtown.

Try Fairview riverside state park in maisonville,la just across the lake from New Orleans. It's directly on a river, great location and scenery, and only 30 minutes from New Orleans. Also, take a look at Fountainbleu State park in Lacombe, la. It's right on the lake and only 30 minutes from New Orleans. Great restaurants around both parks. Both are also very safe and easy to get in and out of. I would not personally advise staying directly in New Orleans. JMO.

Ponchatrain Landing is another option in the City. Not as centrally located as the French Quarter RV park but fairly close to Quarter, less expensive and has a shuttle at certain times. In addition to the State Parks across the lake, you could consider Acadia Park in Lafayette or going to Buccaneer State Park in Waveland. Buccaneer is on coast but Campground itself is about 3/4 mile into park. silver slipper casino in waveland has camping directly on Gulf (about 2 miles west of Buccaneer).

Just drive through Buccaneer State park yesterday on my way back from a day trip to New Orleans. It was a nice looking campground with concrete sites with plenty of space between sites. It might take about 1 hour, give or take the route, to drive to NO. We drove 90 all way to NO and enjoyed the sights.

Cajun Palms is not very far from NO and the ONLY place to stay. Nothing like it any where and the ultimate RV park.

I used to live in New Orleans and when I return to visit with family ONLY stay in Pontchartrain Landing. I would never stay in the "French Quarter" campground because it's not really in the FQ and sits right underneath the interstate. It's also right next to a neighborhood that I don't want to be next to. I don't care if it does have a wall around it. I also would not stay at the one on Chef Menteur Highway because the area I used to live in - Gentilly - is now not a place I would want to be next to. The problem with going across the causeway towards Mandeville, or up I-10 to Slidell, is that all it takes is one accident and you are sitting for hours getting in and out.

Pontchartrain Landing is decent, it's as safe as you can be and still be in New Orleans, and they have a shuttle to take you downtown or into the Quarter if that is where you want to go. That has the added benefit of not having to find a parking space and not risking your vehicle to damage, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I love New Orleans. I lived there off and on until I was 22 years old. I return at least twice a year. But it's a city where tourists are really targets and you just need to be careful.

KOA West is is actually on the edge of the city of New Orleans. We stayed there and recommend it. Clean. Safe. and easy driving distance the FQ.

We have friends who are at Ponchartrain Landing at this moment. They seem to really like it. Looks like others on this thread agree.

We have been to the French Quarter RV Park a number of times, and especially appreciate its proximity to...the Quarter.

This campground came up after Katrina, is paved and very nice inside, also surrounded by a wall with security at the gate.

Never had any concerns for our safety, nor heard reports of that from others.

If you want to be able to walk into the Quarter, and/or partake of the nightlife, this is a perfect to stay.

A bit pricey, but it's right there, and an easy cab ride back if you are out into the night and/or have been partaking of the abundant alcoholic beverages available.

We also love Bayou Segnette SP, where about a 10 minute drive will take you to the Algiers Ferry, which drops you off in the Quarter so you don't have to deal with parking down in there....which can be difficult to get, and is expensive, as are the tickets if you overstay. There is modest fee lot right by the ferry, with an attendant on duty at al times.

Go, and enjoy, as it is a special place.
