Campgrounds - Been here?

We've got our two week Airstream vacation planned Never had a two-weeker before. We're excited! Has anyone been to any of these campgrounds? If you have, what's your opinion of them?

They are all in "touristy" areas but was there anything that was kind of off-the-beaten-path that you did while staying at any of them?

Cherry Hill - Washington, D.C.
American Heritage - Williamsburg, VA
Drummer Boy - Gettysburg, PA

I have not been to any of these parks, but-

If you are into Civil war history, there is LOTS of it in the Fredrickburg, and other areas in VA.

The above link should be helpful. It's amazing how one person's 10 is another's 5, so keep that in mind. We go more by what the reviewer writes rather then the number used to rate it. We used some 6 & 7's out west that were great. We use to stay in the Gettysburg area quite a bit, lots to see in the area. We use to stay at Artillery Ridge CG. Not very fancy but right next to the park which allowed us to bike the whole park. I don't think there was much for kids to do at that cg. Hope this helps.

Haven't been to that one, but have been by it. It looks nice and other folks who have been there say it is very good. If you're going to the Williamsburg Pottery they have their own campground but it looks like a homeless shelter in the off-season (winter).

American Heritage is near I-64 so you'll want to get a site towards the back of the campground or it will be noisy. Seems to have a lot of amenities for kids. Have you been to Colonial Williamsburg before? Definitely worth seeing for adults as well as children. Make sure you see the blacksmith shop and the changing of the guard. Wear your most comfortable shoes, carry a water bottle and a spare pair of sox to change at mid-day. Tour the historic houses.

If your pocket will allow, the Trellis Restaurant is a GREAT place (breakfast and lunch are more affordable but be prepared to spend $20 per person.)

Wife and I took our 1st AS outing for a week at Lake Fairfax. It's about 22 miles west of DC in the middle of bustling Fairfax County but you'd think you're in the middle of the wilderness. They have a Water Park (Memorial to Labor day). sights are good and pretty level. 30amp svc. Water at the sites but dumping behind the bath house. Bath house is very clean. Only negative for us was the camp store offerings were pretty limited but there are major grocery and hardware stores (home depot) within 10 minutes of leaving the park.
Quick access to places like Manassas and Bull run. Reasonably short trip up to Gettysburg and Amish Country. Short drive down to Fredericksburg.

DrummerBoy is an AWESOME campground. We were there this summer, the only thing is it's a bit pricey. I think it's $47 per night for S/W/E. I would try to stay in the second section or the third. The first section is close to the highway and crowded. Nature trails, lots of wildlife (chipmunks), the cleanest bathrooms I've ever been in, playgrounds for kids. They also have a dish washing area in each section, which I really like 'cause we're vintage (no gray water) and small (too small to wash in the sink).

We visited the battlefields twice; they are only about 10 miles away, and groceries are about 5 minutes away.

We got to spend a few days in the Williamsburg area. Unfortunately, we did not get to take the Minuet with us. Williamsburg is a great area and especially if you are a history buff. The Visitor's Center is really a good place to start and end. We loved the night time lantern tour of the village. It was alot of fun.

If you go to the campground tab here in this Forums you can look up campgrounds that members post info on. There is one listed for Carlisle, PA and it show that it is 35 min. from Gettysburg. Western Village RV Park. Sounds interesting and they give the distances to the places to see.

Take a look at Shenandoah National Park Loft Mountain Camp. We drove through there last summer while on a family vacation. This is a beautiful place. It is close to several Civil War battle grounds.

We have stayed at the Gettysburg KOA and it was great! The people there are extremely friendly, all sites are under trees, an introduction movie each night to the battle field and breakfast! We ended up staying a few extra nights!
