Boone, NC

Planning a trip up to Boone, NC area for a week in July. Any suggestions for RV Park, things to do around the area, roads to avoid, etc. ?

I have stayed at Blue Bear Mountain Camp. It is very rural. Spaces are large. It is about 5 miles out of town.

Julian Price Park is one of my favorite campgrounds. No hookups, but BEAUTIFUL!
In July ~80F high and ~65F low. (the main reason we go)

Due to your user name, I'm assuming you know about the Blue Ridge Music Center?

Things to do/see:
* downtown Boone - Mast General Store
* see live play - Unto These Hills $
* Village of Blowing Rock (day trip)
- ask for directions to Bass Lake (1 mile gentle stroll around lake, bring chair and book)
- my wife loves the discount outlet mall just outside of town
- restaurants & ice cream shop :-)
- don't waste $ to see "the" blowing rock
* Blue Ridge Parkway (MUST DO) is only a few miles south of Boone
(along the BRP)
- Mt Mitchell State Park (MUST DO)drive up then short hike to top (restaurant with excellent view or picnic)
- Grandfather Mt ($$$$) touristy & crowded at times - $ campground here
- Mineral Museum at Little Switzerland (restaurant nearby)
- Linville Gorge and Falls overlook (a short moderate hike to the falls) campground here
- Linville Caverns $
- Lin Cove Viaduct - bridge Visitors Center
- Moses Cone summer home
- Crabtree Meadows - campground & waterfall (easy hike down STRENUIOUS back up almost lost DW ;-)

add edit:
There have been some road closures on BRP due to heavy rains. Check the NPS website for a map of these closed roads.

Thanks for the info guys ! AW, great things to do in Boone. We are already going up in August to Galax for the Fiddlers Convention, so I'm sure we'll do the Blue Ridge Music Center then and... no actually, I didn't know about it; so thank you.

Thanks again for the input.

It just occurred to me that i gave incorrect info i my prior post. Unto These Hills is at Cherokee. The outdoor drama at Boone is Horn in the West.

They have planned activities, so check the schedule online.

I've stopped in a couple times on a Sunday afternoon when passing by on the BRP. On a few of those visits a group of locals had shown up impromptu having a jam, all skill levels, just having a good time. Mostly it was blue grass/country/mountain, with a little old time gospel added in upon request.

We have stayed at Blue Bear Mtn and Julian Price. Highly recommend both; but Blue Bear does have hookups; JP doesn't. The gravel road to blue bear is not for the faint of heart.

Blowing Rock is a fun little town to hang out for an afternoon. Blowing Rock Brewery has great food (and beer).

We actually stayed at Julian Price just this past weekend (June 9-10) and got to witness the synchronized fireflies. It was amazing! (And didn't require a lottery like the Blue Ridge Parkway areas that are known for it.

There's some great hiking at Julian Price (the Boone Fork Trail) and several waterfalls nearby. Have fun!

Fireflies are the one thing we sorely miss here in SoCal area--just does not seem to be any around.

Used to live in Huntsville, Alabama--back yard was full of fireflies...and chiggers, but that's yet another story.
