Quick trip
Today made a 428 mile round trip to LA to pick up some aircraft parts.Sure have seen CA the last 2 weeks.
Here are some photos of a MD-3 ground power unit that is used to furnish power to aircraft when on the ground.I just put 3 of the 6 new cylinders on.Sure get to do a lots of different jobs here.
Now this fun boondocking and I get paid for it.
THE COWBOY WAS SO UGLY HE HAD TO SNEAK UP ON A DIPPER TO GET A DRINK OF WATER.

That is a different looking engine. It being in California, does it have a smog pump? If not, do the tree huggers know about it? Keep your experiences and pictures coming.

It is a modified Continental aircraft engine.
BUT PLEASE do not get me started about CA.I left here in 1953 for a reason called politics and I try not to talk about them on the airforum.
Saddle that is hard to do some times.

Smack my mouth. I fall off the the wagon now and again. Left CA in 1979. Should have known that an engine supporting an aircraft would be an aircraft engine. Did I mention falling off the wagon.

Just turn on your TV tomorrow and watch our beautiful weather for the Rose Parade. That is why we are here and maybe the reason so many others are as well....Have a Happy New Year!

Great photos and stories Jim. Thought you might like to see this video on the first jet aircraft flight. A friend retired from Boeing sent it. Course, you might have been there and seen it first hand, yes?
Americas first jet flight, Oct 1942.
THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE PIECE OF AVIATION HISTORY.
This is a very interesting little piece of historical film. It covers America's entry into the Jet Age with the Bell P59A.

Fcu
This week I had to do a Fuel controle unit (FCU ) change on # 2 engine. On a "A" model C-130 this is a REAL job that will try any mechanic.
I think that the engineer that designed this must have found a aircraft mechanic in bed with his wife and wanded to get even. The later models are not as bad to change. For you folks that know old aircraft stuff this is harder than a cylinder change on the old round Wright 3350 engine.
THIS WILL REALY MAKE YOU COWBOY UP AND IT WILL MAKE YOU BLEED.SO WHEN YOU LOSE, DON'T LOSE THE LESSON.SOME TIMES YOU GET AND SOMETIMES YOU GET GOT.

Gtc it
Well I spent the last week or so working on a GTC test stand. We have made a few mod's to it.
The GTC (Gas turbine compressor) on the older C-130's furnishes the air to start the engines and to run the ATM(Air turbine motor) that supplies electrical power and hydraulics to the aircraft on the ground.
The test stand is used so we can check the operation of the GTC after repairer or over haule before we put it in the aircraft. The GTC is the black thing in the center of the yellow trailer in photo 1 & 2.
NOW don't that sound neat.
IF YOU TELL THE TRUTH,YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMEBER ANYTHING.WHEN YOU GET OLD THAT IS A BIG HELP

Boondocking
Just so you kolks dont think it is all airplanes yes we are still boondocking.Boondocking at an airport is better than boondocking in a Wal-mart parking lot,BUT not as nice as the pine trees or the BIG Q but it does pay alot better.
(Photo 1 & 2) My trailer
( Photo 3 & 5) is the view from my EZ chair.Photo 5 is the old cold war SAC B-52 alert bunker when Castle Air Force Base was a SAC base.
(Photo 4) One of are C-130's in the hanger.
Just to brake up the week on Thur.I took a run down to Mojave to pick up from one of are customers 7 C-130 Tires and wheel assy. A nice 500 mile round trip.
THE WEST IS MY HOME AND I ROAM IT AT WILL BE HOLDEN TO NO MAN.THE SKY IS MY ROOF,THE STREAMS MY WELL,THE WOODS MY LARDER,THE CAMPFIRE MY KITCHEN.

You are proof that there is something West of the Hudson River......and boy do I love it out here.....having lived in several parts of this magnificent country...and each place is what you make of it but most of the time.....life is easy here.....just some hiccups with fire storms and earthquakes to keep us on our toes....paula

Mad
Well today this OLD cowboy is real MAD.I hate to use the forums for this kind of stuff BUT I think we all can learn from this and maybe stop some of it
How many of you ever look at the tax and $hit that is added to the bottom of ANY receipt that you get?Well bellow is one I looked at today and this is why you have to pay $100+ per hour shop rate when you have your Airstream or tow in the shop for work.
Today we got bottles of nitrogen that we have used for 50 years to fill airplane tires with.(You may even now have it now in you Airstream or tow)The coast $59.32. BUT the Energy and Fuel charge $22.12, Hazardous material chage $8.45,is nitrogen really a hazardous material?(They dont have the gut to call it a tax). State tax CA $8.80, Local tax .30, OTHER tax .61.NOW who is other tax? Now THAT is $40.28 in tax on a purchase $59.32.
NOW the kicker is it coast $31.50 to have it deliverd.
NOW you all know why you have to pay BIG $$ to get any type of work done.
IN THE OLD DAY'S WE USE TO SAY WE WHERE BETWEEN THE BUNK HOUSE WALL AND THE MANUE PILE. LOOK LIKE SOME THING NEVER CHANGE, WE STILL ARE.
