Day 8, May 10th, 2012.
Hi, now we are at Pompei. This is another ruin. We were told that Pompei was buried in volcanic ashes. People tried to escape, but didn't make it. They have bodys to prove it. [on display] I didn't think you would want to see them, but I did take a few pictures of them. Pompei was a good size, connected, village/town. Their building technique's were quite different as you will see in my pictures. They used marble, huge blocks, rocks, columns, red bricks, and black bricks. The black bricks were not laid flat, but on an angle with the square ends out. Well the pictures will show what I mean, hard to explain. There was also a "red light" house and it was clearly marked. I almost forgot to mention that they also used mosaics and paint.

Day 9, May 11th, 2012.
Hi, today was spent at Sea. No land travels today, but we will stay occupied all day long. So much to do on this ship besides eating great food and we did plenty of that. We had a nice room, live shows to watch, musical entertainment, an outdoor big screen for movies, a 9 hole miniature golf coarse that we can cheat on, an art gallery, a casino, stores, bars, and much more.

Day 10, May 12th, 2012.
Hi, today we stopped at an island called Mykonos, Greece. On this island are nice beaches, windmills, hundreds of chapels, and white buildings. All of the buildings are painted white. Most have blue window trim or shutters, but any color of trim is allowed. They also, may have a rock wall on their house, but it can only be about 25% or less of the total exposed exterior wall. The windmills use small sails instead of wooden blades. In Greece many people have their own private chapels on their property, next to their house. A few of the chapels were about the size of a dog house; Others had room for a few family members to enter. Most of the buildings were kept painted a bright white, only a few looked a bit dingy.

Hi, after touring Mykonos, we walked around in the ship. I saw a mirrored wall in a bar that I thought was interesting, so of course, I took a picture of it. Later we went to the movies. Our ship has a huge [looks like an LED] screen outside on the top deck. There we watched two movies; "Iron Woman" and "The Help". As you relax on the lounge chairs watching your movie of the night, ship employees will bring to you [at no cost] popcorn, pizza, cookies, and milk. Since we just had a large dinner, we only had popcorn and cookies while watching the show. Oh and you don't have to ask for anything, they just carry trays of goodies to everyone watching the movie and ask if you want some. [very hard to say no]

humongous puddycat
ps..thought the dummies were odd staring tourists..

My sister has been to Pompei a few times..

Only problem..She is vegetarian so is my bro inlaw and their 2 children..
..they had a bit of trouble explaining the true meaning of vegetarian..
the locals idea of a meat free meal was smothered in Pork scratchings ..

Day 11, May 13th, 2012.
Hi, today we are at Istanbul, Turkey. The buildings in Turkey are once again different. They like to decorate with gold, tiles, and paintings. In one of the pictures it looks like the entrance to Disneyland, sort-of. It was a foggy day so I didn't have to wear my hat. Today, as you can see, we are in group "Yellow 4" and our tour guide has the Yellow #4 paddle so we don't get lost. We also have blue radios for listening to our tour guide explaining everything. [to much information to remember] Just take lots of pictures. In the pictures you can see that they like points and domes.

Blue Mosque.
Hi, pictures of the Blue Mosque. I wondered why it is called the Blue Mosque until I went inside and saw all of the blue tiles, mostly on the inside of the dome. The pictures may look streaked, but those are wires from the ceilings holding the hundreds of lamps in glass lenses that were originally for candles. And yes, Lee Lee did ask for permission to take these ladies picture.

Thanks for the pictures. Both of these historic buildings are breathtaking. Between Istanbul and Barcelona you have photographed some of the most beautiful and significant architecture in the world. What a great trip. Keep the travel log coming.

Fantastic! I'm so enjoying the pictures of your journey. Your pictures are so lovely. We're hoping to go to Italy in 2014 (hoping....). Can't wait to see the Pompeii body casts and eat real pizza! (I like to mix the gore with the tasty.) We were in Greece and Turkey in September, but your pictures turned out WAY better, so I may have to "steal" them. Happy travels -- can't wait to see where you go next.

Day 12, May 14th, 2012.
Hi, today we visited the ruins of Kusadasi, Turkey. Lots of marble and mosaics. Some of these are very interesting. This place was also buried and is being restored. Broken pieces on tables being put together like jig-saw puzzles. We saw where Hitler got his Swastika and walked down the same road that Cleopatra walked. So I will post some pictures without an explaination for them.

Hi, no I haven't and didn't know what it is, but tonight on TV, Rick Steves had a show on Istanbul and showed a Turkish bath house.

Do yourself a favor and get a Turkish bath. It's called a hammam, and you will thank me for suggesting it. It's a combination steam bath, exfoliation, and massage. You will come out really really clean, and relaxed.

Day 13, May 15th, 2012.
Hi, today's journey took us to Athens, Greece. More ancient ruins to see. We were somewhat disappointed in the city of Athens due to it's rundown condition. It seemed that every ground level building, or part of building, was plastered with graffiti. And we passed about a dozen sex clubs on the main street through town. Even a huge building used for the 2001 Olympics was covered with graffiti. Past that, the massive marble structures were a sight to be seen. In some of the pictures, you will see white pieces of marble mixed with the tan-ish looking marble. We were told that as they are restoring these ancient ruins, they are getting marble from the same places where the original structures came from, and that originally these structures were basically all white. The workers are matching all of the original parts, that they can find and filling the gaps [missing pieces] with new pieces that they have made to fit. Quite amazing seeing the new and old come together to complete these as they originally were.
