Black Hills

Traveling from Iowa to the Black Hills in July with our 25 ft AS. What are the best routes to take and what are some must-see sites with campground recommendations? Thanks!

We just take 90 from the twin cities.
Once you reach the Black Hills:
Nettles highway
Sylvan lake
Hill city
Hill City to keystone train is fun

Jewel Cave is pretty amazing. It may not be open, though...

We were there last year and took 90 from WI. I suggest:

Mount Rushmore
Crazy Horse monument
Needles Hwy
Custer State Park is fabulous

Although we didn't stay there, we passed by the Rafter J Bar Ranch several times and it looked very inviting (nice amenities, large sites). We will stay there when we return.

Broad brush advice . . . To call all sites and campgrounds, get current info, and make reservations ASAP.

For camping, Rafter J would be my first choice. We really liked this place. For places to see Mt Rushmore (hear the lighting ceremony is cool but never got to see it), Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake. I went to Deadwood last year. Very Touristy downtown. Then went to the cemetery just outside of Deadwood where Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane are buried. Kind of cool.

I agree with the recommendations above. We stayed in Custer State Park last fall and it was great. Needles Highway was very cool.

When we were visiting Mt. Rushmore last summer we stayed at Horsethief Lake Campground, almost within walking distance of the Monument. Highly recommended. It was so close it was easy to make a second run over after sunset to see the nightime lighting.

Minuteman Missie Silo Tour in the Badlands is pretty cool. And if you go through Wall, well you might want to visit the Wall Drug tourist trap!

Wondering if you have any recent feedback to share, about reserving campsites and so forth. Is the summer looking crowded in your opinion?

Echoing the Mount Rushmore recommendation . . . breathtaking!

Happy Trails.

We are currently at Rafter J Bar Ranch and it is not full. It might be 1/3 full at the most. This is a beautiful campground! Well worth the $78/night fare.

I would hit the most famous sites like Mount Rushmore and crazy horse. We are going to Custer State park tomorrow.
