My main point isn't about any of these suggestions in particular, but rather to point out that there are steps which can be taken to lessen the problem.
Bingo!

Your entire comment is very well said IMO.

Thank you,

We stayed in BB NP this spring (Feb) what a great park. We were in Rio Grande Village in the “no generator” area. It was tricky to get the reservation, but persistence paid off. We will definitely go back. The were following Covid guidelines when we were there, meaning 50% of the campsites were left open. If they are still following those guidelines, and then relax them, that could open up a lot of sites. I’d keep an eye open for that to happen.
There is also a full hook up CG right next to Rio Grande village. It’s independent of the National Park. It didn’t interest us because it’s like a lot of RV parks, like a parking lot, but they may have openings. Good luck getting in. It’s worth it.

There are a number of good commercial parks in the Terlingua area and you will be just outside the park's entrance. We usually (always) go there in the spring or fall, the summertime heat in Big Bend can be brutal and you will need a good source of electricity to keep your A.S. cool. From Terlingua you can also explore Big Bend State Park which is just west of BBNP. We like to watch for reports of rain in the area before heading that way, the desert will be in full bloom when we get there.

Of course there's flaws.
What system has no flaws? It needs fixing from your perspective, but maybe not from the Park's perspective. "We have 100% reserved, woo-hoo!"
The solution to no shows is to raise the price until that stops. "Yes, sir we have 25 spots open at $230/night."
I get frustrated also, when I want to reserve at Topsail Hill SP or Anastasia SP and have to reserve to the second 11 months in advance.
Then I realize how lucky I am to be here and not in some third world dump where finding food is my challenge for the day.

Thanks for that reality check, Mollysdad.

Hmmmm . . .

"Money talks" maybe, but in this case it blasphemes IMO.

The park systems would be well within their rights, as landlords, to set rules for these miscreant no-shows IMO.

Amazing "entitlement" . . . [IMO]

And such a shame that the unused sites prevent others from the pleasure of camping there. Have heard in some places that the park has the right to allow a different paying customer the use of a no show site after they haven’t showed up and hadn’t called to say they will be delayed after 24 hours. Seems reasonable and provides more revenue to the parks.

Yes, everything is relative and an attitude of gratitude is becoming and usually works in such a way as to make all things work out in the end. Sometimes even better.

Went to Cottonwood campground in September years ago in our class C. Unbearably hot. We knowingly disregarded the heat warning figuring we could muscle through. We could not. Miserable single night like staying on the surface of the sun. Don’t be like us!

Smile Encouragement!

I just want to encourage you that I believe God will reward your faithfulness for prioritizing worshipping Him over reserving a specific campsite! I hope you will share the outcome!

Re "No Shows" We just got back from camping in Olympic national Park this weekend in a high demand campground. I made the reservation at 7am the day it became available 9 months ago. My tow vehicle broke down the day we were supposed to leave, by the time we got there we'd missed the first 24 hours of our reservation. There was no way to call to the campground and let them know. Luckily they did not cancel the reservation. These parks are just not staffed the way they were when we were growing up!

Let's be honest this is not going away any time soon. There just needs to be more campgrounds!

Also the way I see it, the silver lining to this being such a pain in the ass is that only the people that really want to visit these parks get reservations - not just the ones that can pay the most.

Reserved, Not used campsites

Pre-Covid my wife and I were able to get into Grayson Highland SP (formerly known as Mt Rogers State Recreation Area) in Western Virginia, way out near Roanoke. A beautiful SP nestled in the Appalachians near Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau (regularly voted as the #1 SP in Virginia) and notoriously difficult to get into.

As I was backing into our spot, a guy rode by on a bicycle and offered the site across the road from us. I declined since I was already in and ready to drop the hitch. He told me that he had reserved four sites for two weeks but really only needed two and when their friends showed up, they decided on two spots that were near each other. So he was left with two reserved, but unoccupied sites that he would not need for two weeks. I asked why he didn't go online and cancel his reservation to open the sites up. He said, "meh, its not worth the hassle to go online and cancel, besides its only a couple hundred bucks, my buddy and I will split it and if anyone else we know shows up I have two overflow spots." I'm as much a Capitalist as the next guy, but come on man, that's a month's worth of camping that several other families could enjoy.

I casually mentioned this to the host (not complaining) just asking about reserved spots that go unoccupied. The host told me that spots are held for the entirety of the reservation period, whether or not they are occupied. Then the host told me that he had three sites for the entire season. The regular camp host spot and apparently spots for each of his two daughters since they worked the small general store on Saturdays (closed on Sundays). Work one day a week and get free camping for the season. Good work if you can find it.

We normally do not stay in Big Bend National Park because of this. But what we do is Camp in Terlingua and drive into the park to hike. There is a new RV Park called Roadrunner RV it is only a few months old. Easy access to everything and full hookups.

My 2 Cents on NP campground reservations.

Where a publically owned agency offers camping, like the national parks, the campground should be operated to benefit the owners—namely we the public.

When someone reserves a spot, but then doesn’t cancel, another owner is deprived of the opportunity to enjoy his public domain.

So remove the penalties for cancelling a campground reservation--no forfeiture of the original reservation fee, no cancellation fee, no forfeiture of the first night’s campsite fee. Get all your money back.

Offset lost revenues by increasing the reservation fee to cover.

Pay to play but don’t prevent others from playing when you can’t.

We started booking in June of last year starting with the Tetons for June this year. Booked 60 locations for an 82 day adventure around the US. I'd watched a LOT of Youtube, and figured if we wanted to see what we wanted to see, we had to be proactive. You have to play the call into the radio station game just to get "Going to the Sun" road reservations in Glacier. I got them. Now I'm waiting for the very moment they open tickets for August 2 dates to ride the tram in Zion...definitely takes the spontaneity out of "lets hit the road."

Best of luck. I've heard Big Bend is awesome, but fortunately wasn't on our agenda this year.

I think it's more like when capitalism intersects the concept that we're all entitled to use of the National Parks.

Being concerned about other people has nothing to do with capitalism, socialism, or any other 'ism except maybe 'selfism'. It's simple kindness to not sit on a reservation someone else would enjoy just because you're too lazy to go online and release it even though you know you have no intention of making use of it.

We camp at Joshua Tree NP (Jumbo Rocks) a lot and we see it now all the time that the campground is full but so many spots during the week open because people reserve the whole week just to come for the weekend. Just last month, we saw several people driving around asking us if really all the sites were reserved (more than 20 were open on a Tuesday night!), as they only wanted to camp for one night during the week. It's sad that it deprives people of a beautiful NP experience. We remember just a few years ago how easy it was to get reservations to most NP during the times we wanted.
