Best RV Campsites in Kentucky?

My wife and I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and are expecting delivery of our new Sport 22' FB in the next few weeks. We are looking for some excellent camping locations that are as far south of us as possible, without being so far away that we can't still make a three or four day weekend of it. Hopefully this will extend our camping season a bit!

Any thoughts or ideas on some very scenic and enjoyable locations that we could visit in Kentucky?

Land between the Lakes is good. Mammoth Cave. Lots of stuff really, what are you looking for?

Thanks for the idea! We are looking for a great place to kick back and relax, with some beautiful views of anything that's not flatland, in weather that's warmer than Michigan! Sounds simple, I know... We love to kayak and flyfish, so if it were on a lake or a river somewhere, that would be even better.

Any ideas are appreciated!

Thanks!

Great Campsites in Kentucky

Hibby,

Not sure what your interest are but if you go straight down I75 I would reccomend several places. First the Kentucky Horse Park is a great jumping off place for most of the activities around Lexington and horse country. Secondly, I would recomend Elkhorn Campground in Frankfort, Ky. The campground is located at the forks of the North and South forks of Elkhorn creek one of the best smallmouth streams in the state. There is a canoe outfitter just a few miles from the campground and of course Frankfort is a great city to explore. Thirdly, along I75 is Berea, the arts and crafts center of Kentucky. The campgrounds in the area are not that great but the town is worth exploring. A little further down the road is Renfro Valley and the country music hall of fame if country music is your cup of tea. A little further South is Cumberland Falls State Park home of the moon bow on nights with full moons. Kentucky is such a diverse state with the hills in the East, Wet lands in the West and of course the bluegrass region in the middle.

Thumbs up

I second the recommendation for Land between the lakes. Stayed there 3 days last summer and enjoyed it a lot. Not all sites have sewer. I don't know how good the area is for fly fishing but fishinng is what it's all about there. Fishing and boating. Try it and have a great time. We did and will do it again. Soon I hope.

Kentucky is a beautiful state and there so many great places to camp. I would recommend Barren River Lake (The Narrows or Bailey's Point Campground), Dale Hollow Lake is also absolutely stunning, Land Between the Lakes is very nice, Natural Bridge, Nolin Lake.....I could go on and on! If you plan well you may enjoy a great community festival as well. Enjoy Kentucky's Unbridled Spirit!

I'll second Nolin Lake State Park. Beautiful sites right by the lake. Site 30 (among others) had concrete slabs lining the shore...easy to launch or tie up a boat.

Nolin Lake State Park looks perfect for us! It is about an 8hr30min drive, and is far enough south to get away and extend our season a bit... We will surely give it a try soon.

Checkout the Dogwoods and Bluegrass Rally in Taylorsville Ky,thats SE of Louisville. We are signed up and looking forward to it. We missed last yr and I understand a good time was had by all. Hopefully someone who attended last yr will chime in and tell ya all about it. I would think there would always be room for one more. Hope to see you there.

I bought this book...and there are some really neat things to do that you can find almost any place that you would stay in kentucky. Having only moved here about 2 years ago, I love to find neat and diffrent things to do. Cumberland Falls is beautiful and it is not far from Lake Cumberland that you can easily rent a pontoon boat and drive out for the day for a pretty good price and do all the fishing that you want. Or even take a Kayake out too. If you get down to the southern part of the state let us know.
