York and Lancaster, PA
If you are coming through York and Lancaster, PA (perhaps scoping out Gettysburg's battlefields and all of its history...but note that York has the distinction of having been the nation's FIRST capital), there are some fantastic spots for donuts.
This is the heart of PA Dutch Amish Country, so take any side road in Lancaster and you will find good sweets.
Of particular note for this post, check out Achenbach's Pastries (Leola, PA 17540). Achenbach's is the home of the Long John Donut...and you can choose from peanut butter, chocolate, or vanilla icing. These donuts should be their own food group.
In York (17402), don't miss Maple Donuts. Their original glazed donut is to die for; the glazed cream filled is an institution. They also come up with specialty donuts (think Fruity Pebbles, S'Mores, etc.) and pride themselves on catering to America's working class.
BTW, one of Maple's themes is "a balanced diet is a donut in each hand." Can't go wrong there.
