Second to Pecan Grove, but you will be lucky to get in. Best bet is to call.

I assumed that "SP" meant "State Park"? If not, just ignore me. The closest state park is probably Bastrop State Park. It's maybe 25-35 minutes from South Austin. Used to be a schlep out into the country, but no more. Decent place ... have only camped there, not AS-ed there. Then there's Lost Maples--a beautiful place, also not too far away, and there are some Hill Country state parks. Check out Wimberly, as well: about 45 minutes from Austin, not too far to drive, all good roads. There should be RV parks there. I can recommend a good restaurant in Wimberly.

You might check out McKinney Falls SP. Stayed there several years ago, and it's a very beautiful place. Don't think it's too far from Austin.

We had heard of Pecan Grove but were unable to get a spot. Instead, we stayed at Oak Forest RV park and it was fine.
Good sites and quite convenient to the city.
Brian.

McKinney is the closest SP. It's beautiful.
Pecan Grove is in the middle of the city. It's not in the beautiful category, but its location can't be beat and it's perfectly safe.
Another option that nobody mentioned is Emma Long Metropolitan Park. It's a city park so you won't have sewage hookup, but there is a dump station. It's on Lake Austin and quite lovely.

P.S. Not sure what they mean by north and south in McKinney. I'm guessing they're different loops inside the park. Unless something changed with no fanfare, it is just one, unified SP.

I second Oak Forrest. Prior to heading out full timing after we sold our house & all, we stayed at Oak Forrest for several weeks getting everything "situated" there. Nice park, lots of land for dog walking, very nice showers, easy pull through's and back ins, close to town. Easy in and out, too.

Camp Ben McCullogh outside of Austin is a nice place to stay (with a BBQ restaurant right across the road). No sewer hookups but there are full bathrooms and showers onsite.

Check out LCRA parks....not sure if there are any really close to Austin, but they are pretty nice. (LCRA -Lower Colorado River Authority). We live in Round Rock, just north of Austin. I know there is a campsite at Old Settlers Park, next to the Dell Diamond. Not sure how it is though. We just live a mile or so away, so have never camped there. There are loads of little towns around Austin that might have camping sites. Loads of them in the Hill country!

I like McKinney as well. Easy in and out to SoCo without dealing with traffic if you know the backroads. It can be done on a bike if the season is right.

We stayed at McKinney Falls in January, 2014. Great, close-in camping (I needed a flight out for business). Then we moved to Bastrop SP which was delightful - they did have a forest fire a few years ago that took a toll on its trees; we even extended our stay to do more biking. Took a bike ride to Buescher SP near Bastrop and thought that would be a nice place to camp as well.
Texas Parks seemed to be very well maintained; enjoy!

To Gulls - did you find a good place to stay? I'm heading up for a long weekend and read through the thread for recommendations.
